I need some input, please on these Brazilian seedlings!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am planting up all the seeds from Brazil..........there are soooo many that they will take up almost an entire gro light stand. I love doing the work, but do you suppose people are even into these different gesneriads???????? (meaning I will be taking up an entire gro light stand for them)

Here is a picture of only a few chirita tamiana from a leaf and not seeds and only the 10 selected plants of Sinningia 'Cardoso Morieira'. Shall I keep planting............you all please speak up and tell me if i should just keep planting these seedlings??????

OMG Gail those are precious :)
I for one don't have any of those and will HOPEFULLY have things to trade with you in the spring :) So I say, go for it :)

Those look great, Gail!! Your babies are bigger than mine, and you sowed yours later than I did! You pamper them more than I do, though. LOL I think you should continue to pot them up. At least for me, the more Gesneriads I get into, the more I want to get into. It's quite easy to branch out from AVs, Streps, and Episcias into all the other, less common ones. You're doing great!!

That is what I am doing all day Rain..............and having fun doing it!!!!!!! I just planted up all the Begonia Venosas...........so excited...........on to another cup full.....................

I really think the secret to mine were not overwatering.......I put all the solo cups under a Bio-Dome and made sure I didn't overwater and kept the dome on until a couple of days ago...............

I am using lots of perlite on the bottom of each seedling I plant and wicking them, too...........Then I will keep them under a dome for at least a couple of weeks until there isn't room for the top piece of plastic to fit..........

Please save me one of those Begonia venosas. I did not have one single seed to germinate, NONE! Disappointing, as that was one of the ones I most wanted. :o( See how well you're doing with them? I bottom-watered the cups when I sowed them, put them in ziplocs, and haven't opened the bags since. I squeeze the cups every now and then, but I really, really need to separate some of them. Maybe one day soon I'll have time.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I will have plenty.............Rain.........although I did only get 6 Begonia venosas so next time i will plant more of the begonia seeds........

Davison, MI(Zone 5a)

I'd like some in the Spring too.

KEEP PLANTING!!!

You do such a tremendous job with seeds, cuttings, leaves! Please keep doing it!

I love the Chirita 'Tamiana' ... I have two and they are finally blooming! They are so cute, different from the other big Chirita's!

I'm going to google that Sinningia 'Cardoso Morieiera'. Never heard of that one.

I found a photo: Very pretty!

Gail, is Brazil the country you purchases these from, or is that the name of the plant? The plants your growing are very pretty.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have been working on and off since 6:00 this morning...........great deal of satisfaction and I haven't made a dent in them (LOL)..............

Don't forget ladies we divided up the seeds............so I have some........RainGazer has some............jannich is starting some...........and i can't remember.....but each of us doesn't have all of them.........I have the ones I listed but there is a larger list............

Lin, thanks for the pic you just posted.........i don't even know what i am planting up and what they will look like (LOL).........just like growing seeds........

I did find the original list with the proper spelling.......so I made a copy to put the names on the sides of the solo cups.....with correct spelling for people...........

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Maureen......i found a website of a man in Brazil who contributes to the Gesneriad Seed Fund of America...............but I wanted to order directly from him..........can't remember his name but it was like Mauro ? I could find it again easily if I tried............I made a list Maureen with some misspellings up above in an earlier post..........since then I have corrected all the spelling.....................

These are the plants you don't see all the time in the gessie family...........but The Gesneriad Society I belong to and you can also google their site and see their seeds. I think our society is 2.00 a pack for seeds and he is 3.00 a pack but all his seeds are soooooooo fresh and viable..

I shouldn't be saying that because I haven't tried to order from the Gesneriad Society yet but I have heard rumors that it is not as fresh as Mauro's see.

Lindenhurst, NY

HI Gail. Thanks for the info. good luck with all those seeds. It's keeping you really busy I see :-)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I know it....................am deadly addicted to growing................better than drugs or something worse! (LOL)

(Zone 1)

Hi Gail: I had to find my list of the Brazil seeds I got from You via RainGazer:

Achimenes Tiny Red x Self
Chirita Tamiana
Episcia cupreata - red
Seemania Sylvatica (Gloxinia)
Sinningia hatchbachii iporanga-MP0624

Only thing sprouting is the Seemania. They looked real good a couple of weeks ago, I just went and checked on them and it seems like they are disappearing?? I hope they don't croak on me. I am a real novice at the Gessie seeds.

(Zone 1)

LOL Gail .... I agree totally! Being addicted to propagating and growing Gessie's is the best addiction!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

That is ok.........Lin..............you will learn and love it............I have the Sinningia hatchbachii iporanga I planted up today...........I also have the chirita tamiana............but not the others you mentioned..........don't worry about it at all.................and some day...........I am going to send you the piece of equipment from Park Seed that never lets you down when growing seeds.................the best piece of equipment I have for growing seeds........

They go on sale once a year at Park Seed.......it is called a bio dome......with a tall tall dome on it that fits like a glove........with windows on the top to open and close as you wish........we will all get this seed stuff down pat...........in the meantime,,,please don't worry about it..........
I think the small dome which I have is about 15.00.........but I have used all 10 of mine for many years.............once you have one........you won't use anything else...........

Here is what one looks like in use...........

Oh, what a neat contraption! I will have to visit the Park Seed Website .. haven't been there in awhile!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin............it also comes with a styrofoam seed thing for outdoor seeds............every single seed will come up this way.........for sure.........then , if you wish, you can order extra sponges for the outdoor seeds..................

Last fall I started over 17 trays of seeds this way and not a failure to be had...........for the cutting garden I had in early spring..............now it is gessies (LOL)

(Zone 1)

Gail: I have The Violet Showcase catalog and they have the green wicking trays 11X22 and the high Domes that fit these trays. Do you know if they are the same as the ones Parks sells? The ones at Violet Showcase are $10.39 for the tray and $6.29 for the Dome. I guess I should go to the Parks website and look at what they have ... maybe tomorrow I will do that!

Have a good night!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin.................I didn't know that violet showcase carries the bio dome..........they don't.........their good one is 5.95 in lighter plastic with a dome that fits perfectly for leaves, etx.................

I had forgotten that their perma nest trays are too expensive..........you are right.........I order 10 from Park Seed for 49.95 or 6.50 each..........but the domes don't fit well.........that is why I order the green trays from Park and then order the grids from Violetshowcase for 4.00 each to fit the Park Seed big 11x22 green perma nest tray.

This is 15.95 with the high dome
The Bio Domes can only come from Park Seed that I know about.........let me find one and hyperlink you to it................
http://www.parkseed.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDisplay?storeId=10101&catalogId=10066&langId=-1&SearchText=Bio+Domes&mainPage=textsearchresults&RequestType=NewRequest&go.x=12&go.y=8&go=submit

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I lost my whole darn post................the great plastic 10x20 tray and dome are on page 10 of supply catalog number 158 I believe............let me try again..........this is the best buy at 6.95 and holds at least 20 solo cups and more...........
http://www.violetshowcase.com/sup07web.pdf
It is at the bottom of page 10

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Wow Gail..You sure can grow from seed!! Everything looks so wonderrful! I have a couple of those big bio-domes from parks that I use to start garden seeds and you are right..they are awesome! Never thought to use them for gessies...After seeing yours..I definitely will now though

(Zone 1)

Gail: Thanks so much for that link to Parks! I think I will order one to try.

Off to do yard work now .... didn't get any of it done yesterday because of rain and it's supposed to rain all afternoon so I better get busy!

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi jannich.................they are growing great!!!!!!!!!!! I see lots of good plants...............I am waiting on planting some of the others...........last night I planted some up that are so small they may not make it............going to let them grow for another week or so.............

Davison, MI(Zone 5a)

Love that Sinningia speciosa 'Carddoso Moreira Pink'
Cindy

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I think there are going to be some real 'pretties' in this batch of seeds..........now if I can just keep them alive until adult hood, we shall be in good shape..............about 1/3 are planted in their own little solo cups......................the others I am waiting on to get a tad bit bigger...........
