Were these flowers isolated? I was told by a "MG Guru" that the seeds from MG's cross easily and that if not isolated they would cross.

Someone also told me that most MG's will revert back to the ancestral purples. Do you know if that is really the case? I stopped saving seeds on some of my really cool plants because I didn't think they would come true...

Any clarication on this would be VERY much appreciated, as I LOVE these babies, but now I'm afraid to save seeds.

Sorry for budding in - I'm just really c'fused and eager to learn how this all works!

PS - Your Joyce Cobb is stunning!

there is alot of info on pollination and crossing Mg on the Mg Forum. You might ask over there . There are many really mg educated folks on this form.they would know.

That's where I got my information. that's why I was asking about the experiences of others.

Sequee,
I hope I dont' put this out there wrong, but here goes:

I. purpureas will cross with each other if that is all you have growing in the area by bees, bugs, etc. now those types will cross without your help and can revert back.

I. nil types, most likely you would have to hand pollinate them to get some crosses.(it's not easy to hand pollinate either) very difficult for them to cross on their own if not impossible.

I. species, same thing, you have to hand pollinate..

I. tricolors (my experience has been that they hardly ever produce any seeds for me) so I imagine that they could cross, don't know too much about those. But, they may also need help in pollination.

and if you have all three/four different types growing, chances are that the only ones that will cross are the purpureas (and only with each other) if you have lots of bug/bee activity. Usually, you have to get the buds before they even open and tie them, then bag the one you pollinate.. so, I don't think that the others will cross own their own.

What were you growing? Purpureas, Nils, tri-colors, species? Maybe the answer was not clear..

But, save seeds, sure, you may not get the same flower, but some of the ones that cross are beauties anyway.

Anyone have other ideas here..lol. or did I learn it all wrong.. it is confusing to me too.

Sounds great to me! I was going to post that the crosses I have seen are some of the prettiest Mg's I have seen.
So it wouldnt hurt my feelings to get crossed seeds anyway.
