What's your favourite house plant, that isn't a house plant?

North Augusta, ON

I like tropical vines in the house, have yet to find one that agrees with me though. Have tried Moon flower, Corkscrew vine, they survive, but don't thrive....what's your favourite plant you grow indoors that you aren't technically supposed to??
Can you tell I'm fishing for future ideas here? lol

You can probably grow a whole lot more inside than what you realize. You just have to get the light and water requirements correct.

For myself, I have enough houseplants that I don't start thinking about the annuals.

One thing I did try those was a very beautiful begonia that I got for 50 cents at the end of the season last year in the outdoor gardening section and it thrived with bright light except when I started edging it out for my houseplant sunlovers and it went downhill and I lost interest in it.

I've been growing a Hawaiian baby woodrose vine in my North window. It's about 10 years old, and is growing like crazy. (The window also gets decent East/West light...it's a big bay window.)

Good thread...

I've got three plumeria and a brugmansia in the living room for the first time, to be wintered over. I also love my 'Wild Thing' Impatiens, so I always bring a pot of them in to eep some color going in the winter.

hmmmm ... I don't really have anything growing inside that isn't considered a house plant. Since I live in an area with pretty moderate winters, everything stays outside.

I would love to see some photo's of y'alls plants! Tapla, I bet your Bonsai are wonderful! Do you have a pic or two you can post.

Marsha ... I've gotta go look up that Hawaiian woodrose vine ... never heard of that one! Sounds lovely.

I have Plumies that I will bring in ... but let go dormant for the winter months. I have 3 Brugs in the ground ... two are half dead and one needs to be moved because a small tree has grown up and is shading it too much.

Sure hope y'all will post some pictures!

I've been dying to try a Passiflora in the house----I have seeds started of Gold Star Esperanza, can't wait for that one to grow up and bloom!!

Plano, TX

i am trying to grow hibiscus inside because they are such a bargain now and i have an atrium so have light and can make it a bit hummid--i also have a flower vine--forget the name but another annual tropical that i am trying to overwinter--and hens and chicks i am trying to grow indoors--oh and a huge fern that was simply labled "outdoor fern"--they are all house plants due to wanting to overwinter them but who knows--if they did well i might keep them in their pots and after putting them outdoors in the summer might bring them back in the winter again--i am fascinated that bonsai can be grown from so many types of plants!

I brought a big pot with a dracaena spike and trailing coleus right in, we'll see. Also have a tropicanna gold inside for now.

Here's a couple of pictures of my Hawaiian baby woodrose vine. Sorry I'm not a very good photographer.

wow-----it looks really happy there---how old is it?

I just had to go google this plant. Really Lovely! The flower reminded me of a Morning Glory and sure enough it is a member of the same family of plants. One site showed a common name of Wooly Morning Glory. Another said the seeds are a powerful hallucinogen.

It'a about 15 years old; it's been repotted three times since I planted the seed.

I've never seen a flower on this vine, but I'm just happy it's growing.

You can get the seeds from e-bay. Be sure to nick the seed coat and soak in warm water overnight. The seed coat's very hard, so a file is better than a knife. (and a LOT safer!) It's a lot like starting a banana seed. It takes awhile to get going, but grows fast once it begins to catch...
