I have some cannas that have been in my pond all year and now I'm wondering whether they can stay in the pond for the winter or if I should store them dry root in the gh. The pond is about 14 inches deep and last winter it got cold enough that the top half inch of water froze. I had some La iris that did just fine, but I'm not sure if cannas can do that. I can cut them down so that they are completely underwater, but I remember somebody told me that canna roots shouldn't be submerged in water unless they have leaves tall enough to be above the surface. Advice appreciated.
Overwintering cannas in 8a
I have always heard they are fine if the soil they are in is above the water line - if not just pull out and I would heel into the garden the whole pots somewhere - no need for the green house.
Mitch I'm afraid if I heal them into the ground they'll get loose like they did in the pond and I'll never get them all rounded up again.:) I have cannas already planted in 3 places in my beds and people having been telling me they'll spread and I'll never get rid of them. I guess that's partially good news because I do like them, but not everywhere. I'm sure most of these will go back in the pond next year.
In pots during winter they will not spread, just heel in the whole pot. Pull out of the soil - pot and all when the pond starts to be thawed all the time.
Oh, duh.:) Mitch I'm glad you said that. That makes so much sense. Thanks.
no problem - give the green house space to the plants that really need it.
