Anyone doing Halloween?
Ok Everyone I got stuck in a wierd spot and couldn't figure out what to do.
Anyone doing Halloween?
This photo is of our front yard. I think this is my DH's favorite holiday!
If you look close you can see the "squished" bike guy under the rock at the center of the photo.
I held my camera as still as I could and it's almost clear!
Cool...I didn't think the system would let us post a blank post...lol
As for Halloween, I lock the doors and turn the lights out.....I used to be totally into it, but as I get older I find my patience thinning.
I dont do Halloween!
Lights out in the frontk turn off the motion sensor and unplug the doorbell!
Almost no kids around here anyway although that is starting to change.
Glad to hear I'm not alone!!
I love Hallowe'en! I buy tons of candy to give away, but always save some for me! We get a kick out of the little kids that knock on our door.
Love your front yard Annabell!
Joanne
Decorate for Halloween almost as much as I do for Christmas...guess I'm a child at heart..just finished 3 of 4 costumes for grandchildren..usually give out can of pepsi, candies and bag of chips..about 120 little goblins start to arrive anywhere after 6:30pm...lol
Well, I usually do go all out for Halloween but circumstances dictate otherwise this year. The garage - where we normally set up our "Walk of Fear" is a mess of stuff right now, our front screen door was broken in a wind storm and is almost impossible to open and close without pinching your fingers right off, and the sunken patio we are building at the back is still just a big hole in the ground with partial walls - not very safe for trick-or-treaters to be around.
I'm thinking we'll either have to sit out on the front step all evening with our bowls of treats or take the screen door off. Oh well - next year will be even bigger and better than last year was.

Thanks everyone. Man o man,I didn't know I could make such a mess of a post either.
I think it was the 11 hr day at work, or that is what I'm blaming it on. To make matters more complicated I can't open that thread watcher as there isn't a title! Had to get into the CDN forum and then open the untitled.
Any way the "squished man didn't show so very well so I took one of him this am.
We only get about 40 kids here and we have a blast with it. All the props are home made with waste styrofoam and we just spruce things up with the squishie.
Thanks for your patience
Ann
OMG - hilarious squished man!
Ann I think you can ask DG admin to put a title on your post - seems to me they changed a title for me last year.
or just edit the first post so there's some words there.....lol
The tips worked ! thanks Joanne, Carol and threegardeners!
Maybe the others will know what the heck this thread is all about.
I'm happy to say that I learn something every day!
Ann
I love that squished guy! I love Halloween, but don't go all out as I did when my kids were young. I remember one year, sitting in the front yard. As the kids would come up and say Trick or Treat, I'd make them do an actual trick before I'd give them a treat. They all had a blast. There were kids doing cartwheels in the yard and many other tricks. i saw several come back through just to do another trick for me. :-)
I can't find the photos now, but when my kids were in school, I used to dress up as a witch, get some dry ice from Baskin Robbins and take a cauldron to the school for the Halloween party. I'd put all kinds of little skeletons, etc. into the cauldron along with the punch. I also had a Girl Scout troop so I'd have parties here at the house for them too.
The past few years, the weather has gotten pretty ugly on Halloween and on top of that, the number of t or t'ers has dwindled down to next to nothing. So I don't even bother getting all of the decorations out any more. I do believe it's time to pass them on to my own kids so their kids can enjoy them.
Janet
I give out candy and bought a couple of pumpkins for jack o lanterns this year and then I find out DH is taking a trip to Calgary and won't be here. Might head to the other side of town and do Halloween with my grand kids.
Ann
Somebody coming to Calgary?
I always do Halloween, but not home to take pics. Ann...cool set up
Ok gotta share a WEIRD story.
We were @ the farm last year, mid October. We had a contractor that was scoping the site to bo-doze down a few buildings. Anyways, the bodozer guy brought his wife, & I was showing her the spread of horseradish that have been growing along the veggie garden for centuries. Low & behold, we stubble upon a hand graved tomb stone. It really looked authentique. It was sticking out of the ground @ an angle with on bottom left corner buried. I didn't recognize the name & the dates seemed odd because I grew up on that farm & it wasn't there when I was a kid. A few days later I called the RCMP & had them investigate.
Long story short. My Dad had rented the farm yard for a few years & it had belonged to them (renters). They had replaced the stone & dumped the original in the farm yard. Little freaky with it being so close to Halloween. Betcha the police went out in a pair to do that call....there was no one living at the farm for years. I was glad that it was returned to the family it belonged to. It didn't belong @ the farm.... but what an awesome Halloween story.

Joanne
That is weird for sure, what a find!
I bet you were thinking that horseradish had some super fertilizer too!
Ann
I love seeing all the little kids in costumes! I hand out little toys and decorated pencils instead of candy. I can't eat them before Halloween and big kids don't come back for seconds!
Great Idea AYankeeCat! I too have non candy things but they are for my neiborhood favorites......I get the glow sticks for the little ones.
Happy Halloween everyone!
Ann
Glow sticks are so fun! What a great idea!
Now that is my kind of pumpkin :-) Thanks Gardnerkett!
For a change no snow and no -20s on Halloween. Chilly but not really cold!
And no kids in this neighborhood so all quiet!
We only had 10 kids come to the door. This is our 3rd Hallowe'en in this house and every year there are fewer kids. It's a young neighborhood too, lots of families. Oh well, more candy for me to eat. Ü
Joanne
Oh gosh, I must have had over 100+. Then again I'm right downtown and many of the apartment buildings don't have candy. At times they swarmed on the porch.
We had very few kids and this is a neighbourhood that is about 40 years old and undergoing renewal. Lots of kids who grew up here coming back and raising their own families here. I think the late start due to daylight time had a negative affect on the number of kids out. Aside from a couple at the beginning of the evening, they were mostly bigger kids.
Ann
I handed out all the toys and pencils then dug in all the pockets for nickels and dimes to hand out - when they were gone - I turned out the lights and hid. The weather was dry and warm enough to be out with out a sweater and the street was jammed with parents in cars driving their kids from house to house. Talk about wasting gas - the lots here are only 50' wide! Even the teeners were polite this year when they didn't get candy. It was a good halloween. Had to laugh at the kids frightened by the fluffy gray cat that eats and hangs out on my porch! After a few kids - he figured out it was time to split to wherever else he goes.
Unbelievable - parents driving their kids in suburban areas with 50' lots. No wonder childhood obesity is a major problem!
Ann
What a super halloween!
The weather was great and the kids were happy and polite here too.
We too are in an older neighborhood and are renewing with families.
Only one parent driving a single child who ran from door to door like the wind! Maybe the car was to chase her if she went too fast!
We have a family from Fiji who just arrived so I went over to see if they wanted to go with my daughter and husband. The kids ( 15,12 and 10 ) were on their own so we talked and they seemed eager to participate but couldn't go out. I had too much candy so I gathered up a box full and took it over and explained how to hand it out. I then kept an eye on them from accross the street . When I went back to show them how to close down for the night they were laughing and having a blast.
I know that will not be the first "Canadian" thing we will do with them.
Now on to the next celebration.
Ann
Ann,
How nice that you could share the tradition of Halloween with your neighbours. I hope you have many more things you share with them.
Ann
AND parent obesity!
The families from Mexico next door didn't pass out treats or send their kids out. Next to them the families are from Pakistan and their kids were out early (I have special treats for the kids I know) and always had a group of kids at their door. I'll have to catch up with the two youngest boys next door and give them the metal cars I saved for them this weekend. But all those kids were happy to go with me into my neighbor's back yard to pick the pumpkins "we" grew for them. One boy didn't want his because it was dirty when we picked it. LOL His Mom told him that he could wash it off! Then she and I traded plants ourselves.

Sounds like you all had fun! No kiddies have bothered to come way out here for years now! When the boys were small I used to make their costumes and then I discovered some seamstresses that we could rent costumes from. Yay! But the most fun was when the boys were a little older. We have a 'tickle trunk' (a la Mr. Dressup) and I'd always add a few things here and there so it was fun to see the get-ups they decided to go with.
