Most of my plants are in containers still, and still growing, although our nights are in the 50s now.
I have a Datura that has about a dozen buds on it, with one about 5" long and ready to open. I also have a Canna Australia that's just putting up its first flowering stalk. I want to fertilize at least these 2 plants, but is it too late to try to keep them growing?
Too late in the season to fertilize?
I would leave them alone for now. The dat will probably bloom for you before you get your frost, but I don't think the canna will have time. I could be wrong so see what someone else says. I''m warmer down here at the beach and I won't fertilize anything I have this late.
Are you taking them in for the winter or leaving them out? Since the containers allow for colder temps to get around them than the ground does, I'd make sure they went into the garage or were protected for the winter to make sure they come back in the spring.
I've seen a Dr. Suess brug in Anderson planted int he ground that comes back every year and I know lots do in Greenville so you might want to try planting the datura and cannas in the ground next year if you don't want to lug the containers. Course a Dr. Suess seems to be a little more cold tolerant than some.
Anyway.....I would hold back on any more fertilizer this time of the year.
I would not fertilize as the plants are starting to go dormant. It's like you are really tired and all you want to do is go to sleep, and someone tries to force feed you coffee! lol Give them a good blanket of mulch and say "nighty night"
LOL Thanks for the wisdom!!
