What's your method for digging up bulbs?

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

I dug up some lilies that were in a holding bed to put them in a newly prepared spot. There were originally five, but I only found four. Last year I recall slicing through a canna with a shovel.

ARGH! How frustrating!

What is your method for digging up bulbs? What am I doing wrong?

Use a fork....if you hit one then chances are the bulb or root is still OK

Just last week I put a fork on my "greed list," the list the family uses when looking to buy me a present. My birthday is coming up. Thank you for the helpful hint.

The good news is that I went back out there and found the lost lily bulb. Do you have a good method of keeping where they are marked?

Okay, now I'm going to cry. I started digging up caladium bulbs and did slice through a few, but I thought I could still use them. Now I just have a bunch of waste.
Thanks for the fork idea

I have done that too...especially with liliums and daffodils. The fork is a great idea....or use your hands!

I just dig about 8-10 inches around the bulb. If they're not that deep a hand trowel. Garden pitchforks are good too as already noted.
