Has anyone heard of or used these?
I've seen them on a couple of sites and I love the idea of not having to use any electricity--we are in zone 7 and while it might get cold and freeze in January/February here, it's very rare that the ice would be that thick. . .
Any thoughts?

Ice Guard floating 'de-icer'
I'd try it! It costs me about 90$ a mo for my two 1500 watt deicers. Of course I'm in a much colder zone, our electric rates are in the stratosphere, and I keep the water temp at 40 ( koi nut). I don't HAVE to do that. If I wasn't such a goofy koi fanatic I would definitley give this a try even in zone 5. Perhaps you could have a second type on stand by just in case. I always have a third deicer ready in case one fails. And that has happened.
In zone 7 I should think they would be ideal for you.
