Today my partridge silkie was hanging out in the house even while we cleaned it. I left the bale of hay (first time adding hay to keep them warm) She made a nest behind the hay and kept throwing hay and shavings on her back, I left her and went out came back about 30 minutes later and found a egg but it had blood smears on it. I caught her and checked her vent it appeared a little red but nothing too bad. Is it just because it maybe was her first egg? I am just a little paraniod I guess. On a good note I know she is a she definitely now and why I am getting 5+ egg a day from just 5 sebrights, the silkies are laying too
Blood on egg
She was a virgin! There is always blood with the first egg and sometimes on later eggs if they are larger than usual. Not a thing to worry about as long as it is a small ammount and the chicken is happy. It sounds like she is thrilled with the hay. I put shavings in the coop and in the winter I give them a whole bale of hay with only one of the stings removed. It entertains them for weeks, pulling it apart.
thanks!!!! I thought so but being a virgin at keeping chooks I had to make sure. She is a very nice silkie and now that she is a she I will name her. Everyone came in and went through the hay, guineas especially loved it. I placed it where they usually sleep and in all the corners, a lot of the chooks and guineas roost the nest nuzzle together.
I was going to recommend you check her vent but it sounds like you have that covered! :)
I wish you'd stop talking about those Sebrights! It makes me want some. I found some yesterday on eggbid and ran away. LOL
