Is it too late to plant my brugs?

Sunset Beach, NC(Zone 8a)

I have several brugs that have been in small pots since June and I'm wondering ig it's too late to plant them in the ground here in my zone. They're all root bound so I know there's a good root system. LOL. Here they die back in the winter and come back in the spring, but I wonder about waiting this long to get them in the ground.
Thanks,
Barbara

I would so no. You will damage some roots with little time to produce more before first frost. We are in 8b and not all come back every year.

I would repot into a slightly larger pot and wait until spring to put it in the ground. It helps to know the name of it as some Brugs are only root hardy to zone 9, 10 or 11. With those it's best to keep them in pots or dig up and pot for winter storage.

Thanks! They'll go into slightly bigger pots and wait for next spring. Mine are all "common" ones like Dr. Z, Chas. Grimaldi, Frosty Pink, unnamed white, etc. so they've been pretty winter hardy, but I'll play it safe rather than start over with cuttings.

Thanks all!

Barbara,

Kenboy and bettydee gave you right on advise. The only thing else I would advise is, be careful on how moist you keep the soil after potting up. If you are going to try to keep them growing throughout the winter, then you could keep the soil a little moister than you would if you are going to try to overwinter them in a dormant state.

They are so easy to die from root rot in the winter if the soil is too wet, unless they are actively growing. Plus in the winter, wet soil almost always equals fungus gnats.

Gotcha', David. Again, thanks!
