Irish moss

Fort Worth, TX

Can you split up an Irish Moss plant? I want to put it in between my flagstone. What do y'all think?

Yes you can split it. Will say I had no luck at all.....died almost as fast as I planted it. But then I do a lot of things wrong and you may have really good luck. Have been trying to get the little monkey grass started for 3 years. It doesn't spread fast enough. This summer the clover has nearly driven me mad. Presently attacking it with RoundUp. Would like to know how your project comes out.

Thanks I bought some moss but didn't plant it soon enough, (I was waiting on our finishing the path UGH!) so a lot of it has died and I got some more. I am also planting moneywort creeping phlox and some other stuff that I can't remember the names of LOL. That way there will be some variety in the path because it is pretty long.

Sounds like a good plan. Let me know how it works. I will need more fillers myself.

I tried Irish moss one year and it died. I figured it was because I didn't water it enough and didn't try again. It was in a spot that I just don't remember to water. Does the path get alot of sun?

Most mosses like an acidic soil. However, Irish moss is actually a form of seaweed, chrondus crispus. I don't know what soil type it prefers, and didn't find much on that topic. I didn't realize that is an herb, widely used commercially in prepared foods such as luncheon meats. Also medicinal uses. Here's a bit of info on those values:

OK, I'd better edit. First to correct my spelling - it's chondrus. Didn't find it in Botanary. Plant Files has sagina sublata (not in Botanary either) as Irish moss, along with some pictures. Have also seen Irish moss described as carrageena. Becoming ever more curious.

I didn't have any luck growing Irish moss either. Instructions said full sun, but I don't think it can take that in our area. I bought again and replanted, and all the second round died too, as soon as it got hot. Didn't try again.

That's a really good link Yuska. Thanks. It would be fun to grow if it would grow here. I don't have much time for babying plants though. Maybe it would grow in a bog situation. We can try that in our pond if I can find it again. I don't see it offered much here.

My first batch of moss was Arenaria Verna Aurea (Golden Moss Sandwort) and it's good sun or shade but I didn't plant it fast enough and 1/3 of it died. The next batch is Sagina Subulata and it likes light shade to full sun. I think a lot of it drowned. The path is pretty long so I plan to mix in some creeping phlox, moneywort, and another little groundcover who's name isn't popping into my head at the moment. Anyway that's the plan we'll see how it works, the stones are finally in so I'll be transplanting the moss etc and trying to fit it in. Yesterday I was planning on planting all that stuff but my boyfriend wanted to watch a movie so I put it off till today and today its raining like crazy. UGH!
