Grand Finale

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

I don't think that there's a place I'd rather be than in my back yard now. Ok, maybe Maui, or Australia, but that's besides the point. Almost every one of my brugs is putting on a show now, and I thought I'd share. :)

1 of 11 -- Isabella -- she's the one that got me hooked

Wow! How fantastic!!! Congrats Lily.

Portland, OR

What a beautiful way to wake up here in rainy Portland.
Thanks!

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Thank you for sharing! The fragrance in the evening must be heavenly. Is Orange Custard always so compact?

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Isabella was my first bloom also. Yours is awesome! My Butterfly is also struggling with broadmites. I love your pictures! Sooo pretty.. I'm glad your having a heavenly time with the brugs.

What are the symptoms of broadmite? Are they not too small for the naked eyes? Do we se fine webs on the plants, leaves? I've new cuttings from early Summer. Some of them appear stunned, and are not growing as vigorous as others. The leave appear blochy with yellow and sometime curls and deform? Are those Sx. of broadmites?

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

Thanks much! We actually got some (gasp) rain yesterday and again this morning, so that really makes a difference in their appearance.

Betty, the fragrance is awesome in the evening. And to see the moths do their job is a neat thing to watch. Polly told me that Orange Custard won't get to be taller than 3 - 4 feet, and likes to be a shrubby type brug. This is my first year with her, so I guess I'll really see next year. I just love her leaves, though. They are such a pretty dark green, and, again, the cats don't like her, so that's another plus. Along with the fact that she's got nodding blooms.

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

Lily,
Broadmites are microscopic horrible creatures. They make the leaves very brittle -- you can slightly bend a leaf and the leaf will crack. New growth is very restricted and small, and ultimately falls off. No webbing, just very brittle leaves and hardly any new growth.

What you describe sounds like spidermites, which I'd rather have any day of the week, because with vigilant spraying with the hose, you can get rid of them. The symptom of spidermites is very fine webs around the new growth, and you can actually see them. Spidermites will suck the sap out of the leaf and discolor the leaf in the process, and the leaf will curl and ultimately die. Do you have any pictures of your leaves that you described?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Gosh, very nice pictures. That Isabella is a real show off. LOL! My yard is wanting to burst with blooms, but the sun won't shine and today it is windy and rainy. Hope you get many days of enjoyment out of this flush. Summer is so far away.

In_Lily;
This is MVP cutting in July. The 6" cutting took off, then suddenly came to screetching haul and the leaves looks raggeddy. New growth on the tip also turn brown then dropped off.

This is Chrissy cutting at the same time. Which has been struggling to grow from day one. Notice only couple inches of new growth. Leaves are small and sickly looking. I fertilize these every two weeks.

This is 'First Day' cutting back in July. First imerging leaves were chlorotic looking, so I fertilized them with weak soluble fertilizer, nurse it along, but still not making very much progress with it.

Ok, your First Day cutting looks like broadmite damage. See how the new growth is very slender, small and curled on the sides? I bet if you just bent those leaves, they would crack. And maybe the same thing with Chrissy.

MVP? Ok, is the part that I have circled part of the plant? If so, I've not seen anything like that.

Are all of these plants close together? If so, you should separate them, and keep them away from everything else you have...

They're far away from the rest of my healthy looking cuttings...
I don't think I've anything at hand battling broadmite. I'll need to make a trip to the nearby Nursery. What do you use for them? Yes, the circled on the pic. is strange looking, what happened was all the young growth turn brown and wilted. I may have to take that into the Extension office and have them help analized the problem.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

That new growth looks like one I had that was some kind of boring insect.. I never found out what it was, but it completely topped Maya and a seedling. They both survived, but were in bad shape for a while.

Felicia.. I see your lil seedling in that pic of the Iochroma!! That's the twin to the one I have isn't it? I swear it is.. that bud is getting so close!!!

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

Wow, that's just bizarre! Boring insects, only know those from roses, unfortunately. :(
Ok, last year, when I brought everything into the garage, I had a Suaveolens yellow (I gave it away this summer) that came down with broadmites. I just left it alone. Didn't spray it, nothing. It lost all of its leaves. When it started sprouting new leaves, it was fine. Not one problem after that. That's what I'm going to do with butterfly -- nothing.

Joyce, you're right!! That is the twin to your seedling, and that bud is getting so close to opening, I can just taste it!! And the brug behind the Iochroma is my other seedling that doesn't like to hold onto its buds -- it now has three decent sized buds again, after losing all of its buds on the first two "flushes." :)

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

How exciting it is to have seedlings that are ready for flowers.
I'm new at this, but Lily, I've successfully pollinated half dozen of my NOID brugs.
I'm hang out here to learn more from y'all.
Kim
p.s. Whew! I thought I was going to have to battle those mite thing! Yes, they're being isolated from others....
At least I'm not having to worry about tossing those, or worse yet. Burn them to prevent from spreading the disease. Thanks.

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

Kim, I'm new at this too. Last year was the first time I'd set eyes on brugs, and of course I just had to have some. :) I'm sure you know that story!!

You're one step ahead of me -- maybe. :) I've not been successful with pollinating my brugs, however, I think I may have 3 pods that are actually going to make it on Tiara.

It's funny with these seedlings that are about to bloom. Neighbors do come over to look at everything in the back yard (I've got just a few things LOL) and they ask what color the seedlings are going to be. And when I say I have no clue, except for I know that one is a quadruple, and the other is at least a triple, their eyes get wide. I'm dying to know what these are going to be -- worse than waiting for Day Dreams or Adeline to bloom, because these two babies are different from any other brug out there. Congrats on your pollinating success!! That is very exciting!!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Why Thank you! It was Brugie that offerred the prelimary info. on brug's pollination ~ last month. So I went out a purchased 2 other brugs in bloom, brought home and crossed with this white one. On Sept. 28 I tried it out with a brush. Tied the blossom off to keep from futher cross pollination by moths. Viola. Today, I've seedpods from this one, and another single Peach. Crossing back and forth, I've white x peach. Peach x Withe. And the moths did so for me on 4 other blossoms. So I've a total of ten seedpods. I love those Tersa, curruntly I'm raising one indoor. :-)

Felicia, Those are very pretty. I have one that is blooming like crazy right now. It is a NOID but pretty.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

The way I was told to deal with broadmites worked best for me.. Kell said to use Neem and back it up with Bayer's 2 in 1 granules. You have to soak the entire leaf with Neem, and be careful not to use too much 2 in 1 cause it will burn the leaves, but it will take care of them.. just takes time.

I knew that was that seedling Felicia! That tickles me.. I think it's sooo cute.. loooks almost exactly like mine.. too funny. When I see mine, I wonder if your bud has opened! I can't wait.

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

Ok, could not resist taking pictures this morning because it just rained and everything looked so gorgeous. :)
So, here's Everlasting...

and a group shot of the three and Adeline.
By the way, when I took these pictures, it was the first time I've ever seen a Sphinx moth! And, it decided that instead of nectaring in the brugs, it would rather fly into my hair!!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

aaaaaaaaagh! They "dive bomb" me everytime I try to take night time pics! I'm sorry.. I hate em.. they scare me to death.. LOL

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

ZZ, I'm so glad through DG I've learnt so many info about gardening. When I first saw the moths feasting on my Pentas' blossoms during the day. I didn't know what to think. lol, it looks like miniture hummers without beaks, lol. Then I searched and learn.
Indy_lily; your climate must be just right for Brugs, either that or you've "green thumbs" wonderful job for being newbie.
Back to ZZ, I'll do more reading on the broadmites. Thank you.

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Lily! I don't know what it is, actually. I received 4 unrooted cuttings a week or so ago, just stuck them in pots, and now I have leaves. Go figure. LOL!!

ZZ, I had no clue these moths dive bombed people. It was just weird, and I'm glad I had enough sense to hold onto my camera instead of dropping it!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I just wanted to add about the broadmites, that I was able to get rid of them on the shorter plants by digging up the whole plant and soaking it in a pan (or in the bathtub) of 115 degree water for 15 minutes. Kills just about anything, except the plant. Works well if the plants are not too big, lol, and I now do this will all of my new cuttings as a preventative.
Has anyone else heard of this?
I go to chemicals if the plant is too big.
Felicia, your pics are great! Wish I could smell your yard!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Felicia, I've wondered if it's the flash on the camera? If I sit still and don't take pics, they hardly notice me. LOL

Yeah, Hellobebe that water treatment is great for the little ones! I always wash cuttings that way.. Sure seems like your cookin em, but it works and they don't mind at all.. (the brugs) LOL
