My miniature Fuchia gets little tiny flowers about 4mm in bright pink. I will post a pic when next it flowers. I get many cuttings each year, all of which strike very easily, and I pass them on to friends so they can have their own little miniature. I keep it in the fernery as it is very tender. I wonder if it will ever have a woody aged looking trunk?
my favourite little bonsai
weed woman, your bonsai is charming!! I'm sending a pic of an experiment with 'serissa' which might answer your "woody" question. This is an awkward growing plant, the stems going every which-a-way and after 3 yrs of vigorous pruning, it is looking like a little tree............the trunk being about 1/2" dia. The leaves are about 1/4" long, edged in white and it gives tiny, white flowers in the spring. The plan is to make a miniature scene with it eventually. I've just repotted it into a larger trough container and only cut back a few roots. Having never attempted bonsai before, this one makes me feel it might be possible to do.
Sharon
Hi Sharon, your bonsai looks lovely! I had a Serissa too as a bonsai, very early on when I didn't know much about plant care at all. Unfortunately I let it dry out, and as it was in such a little pot it didn't survive. Luckily it was quite small and I hadn't put alot of time or money into it. I might try another one now that I'm a bit more onto it! It had never gotten as nice a trunk as yours appears to have.
Sue
Having seen this plant presented for sale as a bonsai gave me the idea. It does try to send up new ones from the roots and I may have to eventually repot it within the trough to keep that from happening. The weather here is moderate enough it can live outside all year long and, from what I've read, most bonsai need to be outside unless they're tropical. That seems to be the mistake many people make...........buying them and making house plants. Most of the ones seen for sale are junipers and they will definitely die if brought inside. The shapes formed are interesting though. A true bonsai master would probably not consider mine worthy but I've had fun with it. Can you picture a little tire swing on it????
Yes! But where would one find a miniature tyre? I have a little ceramic monkey somewhere, that is supposed to hang off a branch. If I can find it, I'll post a picture.
I keep my Bonsais in the fernery as its just too hot outside and they would need watering a few times a day! They seem to do o.k though.
Sue
Lurker here--miniature tires can be found on miniature cars! I know because my son used to pull some of them off his toys. LOL Not all of them come off, though, so it's best to find out from a mother who has kids who do that. It would look so cute on your little tree-- please post a pic if you find one!
Mmmmm, well, I guess I could look out at yard sales and junk shops for that kind of thing! Good idea Kywoods. I don't know anyone with small kids that would part with such a thing.
Sue
Good idea, I'm sure the "junk shops" would have something--lol, I guess everybody uses that term for thrift stores!
Thats why I wrote it, international wording for what we call op-shops, (opportunity shops)
We have St Vinnies, Salvation army and city mission junk shops.
Love the picture of your Serissa, I am a beginner at bonsai, and looking for a good indoor bonsai.
Think I will look into trying the serissa :)
I have been lurking here too. I have tried and tried to identify this Bosai I bought at Walmart. Their tags leave a lot to be desired for ID. They always give a pic with 3 pics and no real ID,just that it is Bosai. I have been all over the Web trying to find a match, but so far nothing matches. My full size tree book has a pic that makes me think it is Sweetbay(Magnolia virginiana, Linnaeus).
OOPS! I'm new to Digi and the pic is sideways. I'll go fix it and be right back
Posy;
Your Wallyworld's bonsai looks like a ficus. Banyan fig, I think. I love this thread, may I join in, for I'm too a newbie....
You're too funny. Yippie! Congrats, you've a beauty specimen there. lol
I love the Fuchia, and the whiteflowering bonsai above as well. Keep it up, y'all are having a great beginning.
The above Fuchia and Serrisa are beautiful-looking bonsai. I have never seen any bonsai in bloom in my real life, just pics.
Do Ficus get blooms? I am off to see if I can find a pic of one on the Web.
Nope, ficus is strictly for folliage, I love them because of the rugged structures with the bark, as well as the knawling/strangling roots. I've two, not a 'bonsai' specimens. But attractive shiny folliage year round. I keep them outdoor during the growing season. Overwinter them indoor....and they're getting huge!
With bonsai specimen, you'll have to rootprune to keep them in bound. I have a book, will look it up if you need more info. on root pruning of certain type of tree. :-)
I was messaging at the same time as you Lily.Your That is a beauty Lily, I love the knarly trunk:)
I have a book too and I bet it tells how in there. I think i will try to find a flowering bonsai to go with my Ficus. One thing with bonsai is they don't take up much space like some plants do. This is a twenty year old Asparagus Fern and it gets blooms and berries on it but has awful pickers on the stems now that it is old.
We must like similar type of plants. Yes, those fern's berries are attractive, and the thorns. Protect your bare hands when handling them. lol
Kim
Uh-oh...kitty looks like she's just been busted at batting at the fern...LOL Pretty plants, everyone! I've been lurking, and don't have any bonsai yet, and I want one! I have a jade plant that I'd like to make into one. Anyone know where I can find instructions on doing that? Thanks!
Kim, I just went all over the web looking for my Ficus and I finally found exactly what Ficus it is. It is a Ginseng Ficus and boy are they expensive on the web. I only paid $7 fot this one and it has doubled in size. I copied off all the instructions about how to take care of it. I can't figure out why I didn't find it before you told me the name. They are everywhere once you identified it. I hate to admit to you how much time I wasted looking in books and on the internet, days and days and days. I was on a mission and now I can get over myself thanks to you;>)))
....as for your warning about those thorns, too late,I have already shed blood,LOL
Hi Ky, I've just been everywhere on the net and there is a ton of info. on just about everything to do with bonsai. If you type, bonsaiing a jade plant, you might get information on "how to". I'll bet a Jade would be beautiful as a bonsai.
PS. That's a he kitty and he did bite and bat that plant just before I took the pic. How clever of you to read his facial expression. He's not the best behaved cat I ever met;))
Posy;
I'm so glad you have the plant I.D. I too have found a beautiful specimen tree likes that for my daughter out West. Only when I revisited, the plant has died. :((
So I can only let my kids enjoy my plants when they come home. lol
LOL, Posy, I noticed his ears were back, so he has that "just yelled at" look. I'll take your advice and google that info on the jade plant, thanks!
