Salamander needs help

The salamander is what I believe is a tiger salamander. Is it legal to keep it in an aquarium? I know somebody that found 1 behind the dryer and it's now in an aquarium, in the house, being fed flies and crickets. I found the site below, but it doesn't tell me much. Anybody? I feel sorry for the poor little guy or gal. I didn't have my camera with me, so I don't have a picture.
