The nuns at the convent

San Antonio, TX

came thru again. The Sisters of Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio had their annual festival at their convent in Castroville, Tx. this weekend and I came out the winner. I was able to out bid everyone interested in this beautiful Hoya. The instructions that were left on it only told me the bloom would be pink so if anyone can help me out with the name and maybe more info on it I would greatly appreciate it. This being my 2nd Hoya am I considered addicted yet?

I have to tell you that I am giggling out loud!!!! I knew when I saw it that it was the catch of a lifetime. Now I just need to get some real simple instructions on how to take care of it; when to prune and root cuttings, etc..... I dont normally baby my plants but I do take care of them. I think I should take this one inside the house to make sure the winter doesnt claim it. Thanks guys for the info and the welcome (never thought I'd be so excited to be an addict of anything, lol)

Ya know, I have 3 of those cv. Krimson Princesses, and I must say that is MUCH prettier than any of mine. The leaves are so big, wide, and beautifully variegated, and the vines hang down so nicely. Big congrats on that win!
This is one of the carnosa cvs, so it is very easy to take care of. Just give it good indirect light and water when it gets mostly dry. Make sure all the water isn't just running through the pot and not soaking in. You can tell that by lifting the pot at various times to check the weight. When it feels a lot lighter, water...then check it again. If it has not increased much in weight....it is not soaking up any water. You can remedy that by dipping the whole plant into a bucket of water until it bubbles, or letting it set in a saucer of water for awhile until it takes it up through the bottom holes. Don't leave it too long. If it gets heavier when you water, then the mix if fine and you're done. (it probably is fine as the plant looks to be very healthy).
It is probably a good idea to take in in for the winter, altho they can take brief periods in the 40s....it would be happier if warmer. I wouldn't try to repot it now, just set it into a container for the house, or take it outside or the shower to water it. Hang it or set in a pedestal in a window so it gets good light, and you will be well rewarded looking at that lovely hoya all winter.

there are some "joints" that have roots; should I cut some and try to grow new ones from there? i dont want to start cutting alot but would like to try my hand at starting hoyas from cuttings.

Yes, you can do that, but if you've never done cuttings before, it may be better to wait until spring. They seem to root much easier and faster in the spring and summer months. It can however be done now if you can provide some bottom heat for the cuttings. It just takes longer for them to root.

Hi Anaid,
That is one of the best photos of Krimson Princess I have ever seen. It would be great If you could add it to the PlantFiles here on DG. It is particularly good because it shows the nature of the variegation on the leaves so clearly.

Ciao, Kaelkitty.

Hi Anaid,

It is not too different from loading a photo here on the forums. It may take a little longer as they ask you to use the best resolution (ie biggest) version of the photo you have. Here are some step by step instructions, starting from the Home page.

1/ Click on the "Guides and Information" tab at the top of the home page
2/ Click on the "Plant Files" link near the top left of the new page
3/ Click on the "Click here to Search for plants button"
4/ Put "Hoya" in the entry box next to "Genus" and "Carnosa" into the entry box next to "Species" (DON'T type in the " marks LOL!) and click on search.
5/ Scroll down the results until you see "Krimson Princess Hoya, Wax Plant, Porcelain Flower " and click on it.
6/ You will now be in the PlantFiles for this particular plant - scroll down nearly to the bottom where there is a box called "Your Actions"
7/ In this box, click on the link "Upload an image of this plant"
8/ Use the "Browse" button to find the picture on you own computer, just as you do on the forum here.
9/ Write your caption. NOTE: be careful to re-read this a few times as you can't correct it after the next step.
10/ When you are happy, click on "Preview your picture" and wait. It may take a while, but eventually it will show you your picture and ask if you are happy with it - if you are go ahead, if not use your back button to go back and try again.
11/ Your picture will go in the approval queue, and in a day or so, it will appear on the PlantFile entry for all to see and admire!

I know I have probably made these instructions more detailed than they need to be, but it IS really easy, trust me! PlantFiles is a fabulous resource and it is always great to see more material being added to it. Best of Luck,

Ciao, Kaelkitty
