I'm curious to see if anyone grows these, what cultivar, growing conditions, and how hardy they are:
Nerine
Hardy cyclamen
Lycoris
Amaryllis belladonna
Babiana
I never see these growing anywhere
Does anyone grow any of these?
I toured Nancy Goodwin's garden, Montrose, in Hillsborough (sp?) once and I believe she had thousands of hardy cyclamins all over the grounds. If you ever have a chance to go to one of the open days there, it is definitely worth the time.
I grow the A. belladonna and the Lycoris but my climate is so very different from yours.
I already have some belladonna in the ground, and lycoris radiata that looks like it is coming up, hopefully everything is well drained enough, y'all have sandier soil, ours is hard red clay :)
Well, it is funny but I have heavy gray clay. Can you imagine living on salt water and having clay?????? I foolishly never even checked before we bought this house; I just assumed the soil would be sandy. I am told it is milions of years of oyster shells ground into the hardest (when dry), nastiest (when wet) stuff ever. It is full of calcium, which is good, and has almost toxic levels of phosphorus.
hmmmm.....that is pretty wild...oyster clay. So then you don't need to add phosphorus to your beds?
No, and I wish I knew how to counteract it.
That's kind of luck of the draw Ardesia. The soil varies wildly around me. Usually sand right near the ocean then farther inland sandy loom. By the time you get to Sun City it's clay but sometimes that clay ends up around where rivers dump into the ocean. Never heard the oyster shell thing before.
I still can't figure out why my soil is black. It's sandy and black with about a 5.5 PH. Think I'll get it tested when I get the chance.
Here in northeastern NC lycoris radiata pops up every year. It's nickname is hurricane flower.
That's good to know, I started some this spring but no blooms. I understand it takes awhile for them to get established...so I got a few different kinds to be safe....they're so pretty.
so has anyone tried Nerine or Babiana?
