CLOSED: Gold Star Esperanza / Yellow Elder
That is so pretty, Wonder how well it would do in a pot? indoors for winter?
wondering that myself.....
well now, this is a tropical shrub that can grow to 4 ft. tall by 4 ft. wide - - but i figger that if you have it in a proportionally large container so its roots keep happy then you can keep it pruned to whatever smaller dimension that you desire. why not do a little experimenting and them comment on your results in the comment area on the PlantFiles page next summer?

such as this one by a member in Tennessee:
Gold Star Esperanza is an intermediate between Tecoma stans var. stans (Yellow Elder) and T. stans var. angustata (Arizona Yellow Bells). It blooms much younger than either parent, and is sold as an annual and/or container plant in many areas.
LazLo, I just collected many of these seeds this past wkend!
Any tips on propagating them? Inquiring minds want to know! lol
:~)
i put a few about 1/2" deep in seed starting mix in jiffy pots under a humidifying dome - germination 18-30 days. three inches tall as early as two weeks after the sprout busted through the top of the soil.
then, i experimented with a few using the baggie method ... so far, 10 days and no sprouting yet.
I would love to do that experiment!! Ill take some!! Do I have anything you want??

In a pot:
just a note of interest on growing this in a container ~ I have a small one that has bloomed all fall which I have in a pot. It now has 3 seed pods. I am keeping it potted to provide winter protection.
and... the local garden enthusiast has a large pot and this is growing huge and beautiful. I think the size of the plant hinges on the size of the pot too.
Can be done in a pot folks. Just needs cold weather protection... pod
OMG, I didn't think I would see any seeds to this, I have this in a large pot and it has had seed pods on it forever and I was afraid I would lose it before the seeds were ready I don't have enough light in the house to bring it in. It's a gorgeous plant! I grew purple lianthus with it and it was a beautiful combo! I've been covering it every night to save the seeds lol Mine is about 3' tall.
I got seeds to it that were old that someone was giving away and didn't know how to plant so I just put them on top of some pro mix barely covered and only had two germinate but the seeds were like three years old. I kept them outside in the late spring maybe I should have started them inside sounds like your seeds did better Lazlo, I'll try planting them earlier in the house and I'll plant mine 1/2" deep this time if I can get some seeds :)
Lazlo, I'll dmail you for some seeds and I can quit covering this plant lol Thank you so much! Gosh I wish I lived in a warmer climate!!!

Well, I'm gonna try my darndest to keep one as a house plant----my growing season really isn't long enough for these types of things (as I look at a Moon flower vine and a Corkscrew vine on the dining room table trying to get a flower out of them)
Oh dear, 3G, I was thinking about trying that corkscrew vine myself next year, but if it takes too long to flower in your zone, not gonna work in mine...rats. Did you start yours early indoors?
Joanne
Apologies to LazLo for the highjack...
I started them indoors in February-----they were just setting buds when I brought them inside for the winter. The corkscrew is happy in a south window.
The moonflower I got maybe 6 flowers before I had to bring it in----I got 2 flowers inside, then the rest of the buds (and it was loaded) blasted. It's sending up lots of new shoots and hopefully will set more buds.
I got my seeds today, doing a happy dance! Thank you LaxLo soooo much, thanks for the perennials/annual seeds you put in there too it will be interesting to see what I get out of them, thanks again you have made me a happy gal!!!!
