New to Brugs (advice please)

Adelaide, Australia(Zone 10a)

I just bought my very first pink flowering brug and don't know much about them beyond just loving the flowers. They seem to do well in pots but I'm thinking of putting it in the ground. Would it be ok in a morning sun afternoon shade position in a fairly hot part of the world? We get up to 100f in summer (occasional light frost in winter). Or do they like to bake in the sun?? Also, can I keep it on the short side - maybe about 6ft high? I've seen them very tall but don't have a spot for something that big right now. When/how do I prune it?? Any advice and stories would be helpful. Thanks

Congrats on your first brug!! I'm sure there will be more to come, because they are so addicting. :)

I've been growing brugs for only a year, so I still have much to learn, and I'm sure someone who has been growing these for much longer than I will come along and help. I can tell you though, that not all cultivars are the same. Some can withstand constant sun, where others cannot. So, if you're able, I'd say keep your brug in a pot for now. See how it does in various areas of your yard (full sun, part shade, etc.). Watch to see if it wilts in full sun in 100 degree weather. If so, move it to a shadier spot. Once you find a spot it likes, then plant it there, if that's what you'd like to do.

You can keep it trimmed down, just leave about 6 nodes above the "Y" in case of die back, etc., and to ensure you'll have blooms. The people who aren't lucky enough to live in zone 10a, and can keep the brugs outside all year, generally cut the plants back right before/after the first frost. In other words -- fall. :)
