How long does it take anthurium buds to grow to full height and open? I have a pink anthurium (some kind of hybrid that I got at Home Depot) that I am trying to coax into bloom. I noticed the first bud in late August, three more in early September. It is mid-October, and they are still relatively small and unopened. Does my plant need more light or plant food, or do anthurium flowers just take months to develop?? Help!
Anthurium re-blooming (taking too long?)
I don't grow anthuriums, orchid, but this will bump your post back up and maybe someone will help you.
They don't usually take near that long to open; I hybridize with Anthuriums so the opening of the flowers is critical to me. From the time they first appear to opening should be no longer than a few weeks, although it may vary with some species. The blooming types (i.e. ones with colored flowers as opposed to green or inconspicuous) are not any slower than others.
Does the plant get enough light? Is it too dry or too wet? Have you fertilized?

The plant was outside (under an overhang) for the summer, but living in the Northeast, I had to take it inside for the winter. It hates drafts and loves humidity, so I put the anthurium in my bathroom under a window. The window is a southern exposure, so now I am wondering if I am giving it too much direct light. (The plant stand is underneath the window -- not at windowsill height.)
I water it every few days to keep it moist, and I give it blooming plant food once or twice a month. (The leaves are mostly in great shape!) It is planted in a combination of epiphytic soil and regular potting soil.
If your plant were getting too much direct light, the leaves might show a yellowing or bleaching yellow look rather than a healthy green. If they look nice and green with no "bleached" yellowy areas, then the light is probably OK. It sounds like you are doing everything about right; only question I have now is what brand of fert are you using and what concentration (i.e. how much per gallon, if soluble, and how much in the pot, if dry).?
My anthurium's leaves are nice and green, so I guess it is not getting excess light! I give the anthurium either Bloom Plus Plant Food (10-54-10, 1/4-1/2 tsp per gal, depending on whether the plant is indoors or out) OR Schultz African Violet Plus (8-14-9, 7 drops per quart). Both are given dissolved in lukewarm water.
Thanks for the info! Now, what I suggest, and what I do with all my Anthuriums, is to give the plant regular fert (i.e. not bloom booster). I've been using the regular Miracle Gro. I don't give bloom booster to any of mine and they all bloom almost constantly. Anthuriums don't seem to respond to the bloom booster the way other plants do. The only time I use a high-phosphorus fert (which is what the bloom booster is) is when I have just potted up a plant and want to encourage new root growth.
By now your plants have more than enough P; they need some more N and K now.
Thanks! I will try giving the anthurium a rest and then a light feeding of Miracle Gro.
