I've got a few perennials that need to be moved. Is it too late to do that in zone 5b? One is a Shasta daisy, the other is a columbine. The daisy was new this past spring, but the columbine is going on its third year. They say to transplant in time for the roots to "get established" before cold weather sets in, but how long is that? And what do they mean by "cold weather?"
Transplanting container perennials in fall
As long as you can work the soil, go for it!
Great! Frees up some pots for bulbs!
Don't worry about it. ...it will be fine. Look what zone I'm in...done it for years. The ground doesn't actually freeze until November here, so if you plant them now they will have several weeks to root in. I like to not disturb the roots too much when planting summer container plants into the ground, but if you seperate the plants try some Mykes.
They're not going into the ground since I live on the 6th floor of an apartment building and have only a container garden. The'll be going into other containers. Will that make a difference?
