Rhododendron - English Roseum

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Bought this a couple of years ago & managed to over-winter it in Calgary. Tags says good to -25F; -32C. Last year I had built a little burlap & straw hut & it seemed to pull thru fine...but no flowers. I think I uncovered it too soon.

Since it's an evergreen, should I just leave it uncovered? Or should I keep it covered well into May?

so is the bloom on the bottom from the first year you bought it cause that is a lot of bloom for our country

Yes. Picture Bloom is last year. This year it has not bloomed, but has formed buds.

Ann,
Was it you that suggested that it be protected well into May?

Jo - that picture of your rhody in bloom is spectacular! Holy cow. I hope you figure out how to get it to do that again.

I guess, just buy another from Costco in the spring. I think it was $15

I think it was Lynn who leaves hers covered till no danger of frost. She may be able to correct me but I'm sure hers stays covered for a long time in the spring.

Alberta is not Rhody country...I'm impressed you got it through the winter, let alone bloom. However, new rhodies are often treated with a hormone to induce extra blooms on young plants. New plants often take several years to get back on track and resume blooming...that even happens here where rhodies grow like weeds.
