[opps! I posted this originally as a reply in another thread!]
Does anybody in this forum live in south Florida?
I've greatly expanded by veggie garden this year, and am ready to plant this weekend, and wondering if anyone wants to share experiences?
I have lots of room and looking for unusual things as well as the normal stuff, like experience with different tomatoes, etc.

south florida vegetable garden
Hi Michael I am in Naples also. I have two raised beds and I just transplanted my Tomatoes and Peppers out. I have squash also and has taken off like a weed. I am still in the process of getting the area around my beds covered with pine straw. And this morning I just put in my drip system. Hopefully save me some time on watering and foliage problems. Nice to meet you we can take notes with each other.

Hi Michael ---- I live just west of you on the east coast. I've already started a thread but will be more than happy to grow and share with you as I'm sure aries44 (Flip) would also as he is south of me in Miami. I've already planted and have been harvesting cukes and okra or oprah as my four year old grandson and garden partner calls it. The spots you see on the cucumber are from sunburn as it has been hot for them (Diva cukes) but the quality and quantity has been fantastic. I just this morning picked five beauties but gave them to a friend otherwise I would take pictures. I grow everything in Earthboxes www.earthbox.com so it should be fun. Ok Im going to continue on the original thread that I started a month ago. See you later....
As far as growing tomatos are concerned you can grow any variety. I grow twenty or more different varieties with great success. I staggered my plantings this season NOT BY CHOICE BUT BY NECCESITY. I tripped and dropped my first tray and mixed up the seedlings so I saved a few (Pictured) and started all over.
Hello. I am new to this (or any) forum and have managed to pretty much kill of most veggie plants since moving to Florida 12 years ago. ( I do keep trying, though) I was growing all our veggies in Conn. for many years organically and find this is pretty much impossile here. I am insanely jealous of you guys who have squash and cukes :-). Mine get mold and any spot disease available. Is it just Fort Myers, perhaps? Earthbox is a wonderful invention for my tomatoes and peppers, for those I haven't killed off yet and give me hope. I would love to get green beans and squash and going so if anyone has suggestions I am all ears. Many thanks for any and all scoldings and suggestions.
Oh God, I have some serious zone envy here! That is gorgeous!
VeggieFla --- I started a continued thread "Vegetable Garden II" It has lots of additional pictures and shows squash growing in containers as I did not have any more EBs to spare. We have high humidity in Fl and must use BT spray to eliminate mold and fungus. It is available at Lowes. I'll be taking pictures today and will post them on my other thread.
Tplant, which BT are you using?
Bacillus thuringiensis is specific for caterpillers only and won't touch molds or fungi. I'm real interested in finding one that will work with fungi.
I'm sorry! I should have mentioned that I use two types . The BT and the other is put out by Bonide Products. It comes in a white plastic quart size container and really works great. It also keeps the dreaded horned caterpillar away from my plants. I also use the yellow sticky traps that captures flying insects especially white flies. I will take pictures of the Bonide cantainer today so you can see it. I purchased it at Lowes but I'm sure Home Depot would also have it as they are very competitive to each other.
Serenade - Bacillus subtillus Mycostop- Streptomyces griseoviridis are two fungicides of this type. They don't work quite as well as conventional ones in my experience but they are available to those who do not wish to use sulphur, copper, or bicarbonate based fungicides.
Farmerdill, thank you! You are the man! I will so note the names. Good information!
Thanks!
I am off to Lowes for the spray/powder, the potting mix etc and some squash plants :-) Time to try again. I've got 2 EB's sitting idle!!
I don't have a digital camera but will let yo know how I'm doing. I appreciate the sharing of knowledge and support.
Dar in Fort Myers
Hey everyone! Nice gardens. I have a few acres to work with ag zoned. I sell at the flea market =). But I am getting ready to start up and I will post some pictures tomorrow. It's a litle bigger scale but I hope you like the area. Seeds where planted today. I'm in Sarasota.
Looking forward to the pictures Laserkoi. Wish I could be a Market Gardener with my tomatos and such but pretty tough to do in my town with the town ordinances...I know I would do real well with my tomatos especially grown in earthboxes or EBs as we now call them.
Sometime you should head up this way and sell the crop with my son. =) You could bring your crop and sell it also. I think you would have fun...
Do you have any more pics? I envy your earthbox or EB [lol] garden. It looks quite amazing.
Rich
Well, if you jump over to the tomato thread, I'm pretty active over there. I have posted an ongoing series for this season and it is A GOOD ONE in spite of last nights severe cold. I can grow a lot of tomatos in less space because of the EBs but I'll have to settle for a backyard farmer for now.
Ok, but if you want to come and join us and have a good time your welcome...
Rich
Thanks but a bit far for me!
Really? How far?
Rich
I am south of Ft Lauderdale.
Oh, thats really far. Do you have any moe pics of your garden?
Rich
I'm not in Florida, but nice gardens you all!
Thank you Dean. Laserkoi -- I won't be taking anymore pics of my plants until I can clean up all the frost damage as some look pretty raggedy but they will revive and the others are loaded with tomatos, broccoli and brussel sprouts.
Ok. whenever you got time.
Rich
