Here goes....

These are tropical plants and have to be taken inside in winter, where you live. Cannot stand freezing. If you are just getting a cutting, will have to be rooted before potting. There are many ways to root, in jar/water, under lights, or in loose soil/good drainage, whichever works best for you. They will need lots of fertilizer to bloom in summer, can go outside when weather is warmer, they prefer temps 70-80-90 degrees.

Hope this helps.

what kind of fertilizer should i get...... what about he seeds and i just plop them in some soil since they will stay in their pots? how big of pots do you suggest?

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Hey if I can manage not to kill these plants anybody can do it!!! I use the same fert that I use on my trop. hibiscus. I use Miracle Gro 24-8-16 and put a tbs. of Epsom Salt per gallon of water for the potted ones only.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Well brug seeds are a litle tricky, gnats get in the damp soil, lay eggs and eat insides of seeds. I start mine in seed mix, scalded to get rid of any bugs, let cool, plant seeds, barely cover, water once lightly, put plastic bag over, put under florescent lights upstairs, they need to be kept warm enough, 73-80 degrees.

Any fert. 20-20-20, 18-18-21, or any numbers like AuntAnne said.

Utica, NY(Zone 4b)

Can I start them now since they will be in pots,,,, then my question is once you bring them outside in the summer and then bring them inside again how do you get the bugs out of the pot from the summer? Or should I leave them on my sunporch that gets like the tropics during the summer?

thanks you ladies you are all so helpful,,,I am so glad i stumble on to this sight when i did!!

If your sun porch is that sunny and warm, that's where I'd put things. Wish I had something like that. And I've never really had probs with bugs in the house from pots.

What is seed mix? is that potting soil from Miracle Gro?

Really I know my questions are silly But if I do not ask how will i know and learn! LOL

I think Hibiscus was talking about seed mix for when she starts seeds. For your cutting, a good soil might be something like a standard potting mix (Like Miracle Grow soil) mixed with 50% extra perlite.
If you're gonna try seeds, any soil made as a seed starting mix will work fine. They usually have ingredients like vermiculite, peat moss, & perlite.

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

Hi Jane,
Sorry I can't help you any with seeds, I have never tried them from seeds, as for your cuttings the first thing is to not panic, yes, some of them are hard to get going from a cutting & I am not sure on Wild Child, as I don't have that one, but over all I have found rooting in water is the best (FOR ME) I change the water every day or 2 & the roots just happen, I would wait till next year before you worry about bringing bug's in the house, but keep in mind if your sun room is not heated they will not survive a freeze, You will get some awesome advice from people with better knowledge than myself here, but I just wanted to share with you what I have from the little sticks I got in the mail, When they are rooted & planted YES, THEY love the fertilizer I use Miracle grow. Potted in Miracle grow moister control potting soil, now keep in mind this is just my way:)
I just brought mine in 2 days ago, this is just some of them:) will post a PIC of ones in water just over a week in a minute, as I can only post 1 PIC at a time.. Hope this helps you some:)Anita

Very good pic of cuttings started in jars/water. That is how I start all of mine, but inside house, under florescent lights.

Tom said it all. I buy regular small bag of seed mix, it has vermiculite etc. a fine mix for seed sowing, or you can make your own. Also use Miracle Gro potting soil for plants, mine has some perlite already in it, I usually add 2/3 more, to make soil loose and drain easily.

NYVOICE99 I am awe struck by your picture! What made me more interested was your location! Ok. Can you share...where do you put these plants, do you grow them
on after taking them inside, and if so ...HOW?????
Do you root prune, change soil, what is your process and how do you over winter them?? Pleas share. I am totally inspired!! I don't have any although I have growing
growing set up in my basement. I also keep 2 fully loaded Costco adjustable metal 5 shelved racks with plant stock over the winter. But I am dying for my first Brug and would love it if you could find the time to share your experience. I would be forever
in your debt!!

Jazz,
I have to go box up 2 trades & get some house work done & then I will come back when I have some time today:)Anita

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

HI Jazz,

From end of May till Sep-Oct depending on the weather they are all outside on my deck, the rest of the year they are under 12 cheap 4' shop lights in my basement. I only fertilizes just before they are going outside & while they are outside, I stop fertilizing over the winter, as I don't want them to keep growing anymore than they already do.
As I said above, I root mine in just water changed frequently (Every day or 2)
When I have a WELL rooted cutting I plant in this size container with Miracle Grow potting soil with moister control (I used to just use the plain till this came out) Water once a week with Miracle Grow fertilizer & just plain water if needed more than once a week. Hot summer I sometimes have to water everyday:(

Thumbnail by NYVOICES99
Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

After they have out grown the above container I tease the roots & plant in this size with fresh MG potting soil, same watering applies.

After they have out grown the above container I tease the roots & plant in this size with fresh MG potting soil, same watering applies. Now I have a 7-8' tree, I think in the spring I will be root pruning to keep them from having to go to a bigger container, I may also try it with the above size, cuz they are VERY HEAVY & I would like to move them myself, but I can't due to the size of them in the biggest container. Trust me I do nothing special with them at all. Hope this helps you:)Anita
THIS IS ONLY MY WAY OF GROWING THEM, IT MAY BE WRONG, BUT IT WORKS FOR ME:)

8' I will try to keep them from getting any bigger.

Anita, Thanks for the info! You are very kind cause I'm sure there are lots like me "Newbies" who want to have this marvelous plant in their home/ yard.
I am an advanced M.G. I grow almost everything but I have never had a Brug.
At one time when I was 28 (I"m 56now) I had 250 house plants!! All in a big window across the whole front of my apartment. One of the 6 redwood stands I had made started to fall . I was in the din. rm on an exercize bike with a hair dryer on my head. I don't know if you remember them they looked like a giant blow up Whoopie cushion on your head!
It had that long tube from the dryer to a box and that box was plugged into the wall.
I was also on the phone with a long curly extention hand set cord. Got the picture! When the first of the six 5 shelved stands started to fall I tried to get to it and found my self tripped up by cords, bikes, dryer, and flat on my face as 6 shelves full of plants one hitting the other crashed to the carpeted floor. There we all lay in about a foot of soil and broken pots!
I can't tell you what I learned from that..but I knew I would always love plants
and nothing would deter me from having them in my life. and all the work was worth the effort just to smell, see feel the beauty of green things!!
I have spent many years gardening Outside!. But the last 10 years I have gotten
back to gardening indoors and I am loving It.
I put up about 50 cannas, 50+ pot dahlias, Elephant ear, calla lilly, begonias,
and grow about 50 flats to plant out around my home.
I am sooo looking forward to having a Brug and i am thankful to meet you and learn all so i can be successful growing one when i get one.
Thats my short story.
Are Brugs your passion. What else do you grow?
Julie

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

Hi Julie,
Your welcome, Oh I do remember the old hair dryer's & I can so relate Columbus Day 1986 I lost over 200 house plants to a fire, It took me a few years to get over it & I often think about it, but I am back at it:)
No, Brugs are not my passion or I guess I could say they are & my over 1000 named Daylilies are an addiction, I really like any & all plants, Brugs, Daylilies, Iris & Hosta are at the top of the list. The better question is what don't I grow:) My list would go on a long time if I tried to tell you what all I grow. I just sent out all the cuttings I took from my Brugs, let me see if I can't find 1 more that needs a hair cut..:)Anita

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Oh my, Julie, the visual I got in my mind reading your story made me want to laugh but I think I would've cried with all the plants trashed on the floor!!! I am 55 so I remember the hooded hair dryers and the corded telephones...

I finally had my first brug bloom this summer and it is addictive for sure. I am certain that someone will have some brug cuttings and/or seeds for you. When I bring in my NOID white I could send you a couple of cuttings if you'd be interested. I have some bloom buds on it right now and am hoping for my second flush before I cut it up.

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

janemarierose: I LOVE your garden designs. Please forgive my bad manners---I'm on your thread and asking if someone else wants some of my white NOID brug cuttings...would you be interested in a white? Let me know and I will make certain that you and Julie get first dibs on cuttings from my white, OK?!

Jan

Watertown, NY

Jazzy, send me your address, i think I have some cuttings I can send.

Janemarierose, I live an hour north of you and have had a wonderful time growing brugs. I have long since lost count, but I think I have around 100 different varieties. You will have to make a trip up here next summer to get some cuttings.

Fenton, MI(Zone 5b)

JanLynn & theraglady I will accept your kind offer. I will dmail you and you can tell me what i should do!!
Oh my Nyvoice99 I know how loosing 200 plants can be but I have no idea how awful a fire must have been for you in your life. It must have been devastating to say the least. I'm sure it changed you!!!
Hey you are the right gal to ask this question of.. I know Iris borer striped my over 100
varieties of Iris and after about 7 years with loss of vigor and small pieces from the year before attempting to get a start I finally gave up. i now host only about 10 varieties.
But here is the ques. it seemed the better my soil, the richer my soil the more borer invasion? Any truth to that/ i never had a problem in poor dry soil. But a move to a compost , humus rich bed devastated the plants in short order!! Or am i full of compost??

Utica, NY(Zone 4b)

Oh janlynn,,,, I'd be thrilled to be on your list for a white cut of a brugs....... it's all so exciting!!

Like waiting to give birth!!!!

theraglady,,, your right watertown is no far at all!!! oh beware though,,I might no want to leave! LOL

JMR

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

Jazz,
I'm far from an expert on any plant, I would say you are right, but I would also post this question on the Iris forum, some very smart people about Iris, I'm sure will help you better than I.

Jane,
Will get that list sent to you this morning.

Janlynn,
Please let me know when you get mine, Glad I did not send you a white:)

Brenda,
The cuttings from you are doing great. I am still on the hunt for a double, I caught myself looking over on Evil Bay yesterday, Thank the lord I came to my senses before I bid, after getting miss named ones from eBay, you would think I would have learned.

:)Anita

Watertown, NY

Janemarierose,

I am still waiting for your address. I have made two runs to the post office this week to mail brugs, well DH has, and would like to send you a few, but need your address, unless you just want to drive up to get them. It is about an hours drive.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Have you guyz checked www.seedsprout.com for plants? You don't get little cuttings... you get a Plant!
Also you can get cuttings at www.katzkuntrykuttins.biz for a good price.
Although everyone is getting ready to chop on their brugs for winter... if there is something you just can't live without.. I highly recommend those sites.
Patience is key.... good things come to those who wait.

Listen to me.. Like I have a shred of patience anywhere... what a joke!
