I was watching think it was ABC world news tv and they had this guy on there talkign about the Monarchs migrating and that the Professor got a bunch of children and they put tiny stickers on the butterflies with an email addy and that if you happen to see one of them to try and gently capture it and send an email to the addy on the sticker that it stopped by your place on its trip for warmer weather.
He also said that butterflys from like georgia and alabama and these states head across the states sideways like headign for Texas and nothern ones head straight down and that if a Monarch gets moved from its natural sumemr spot that it can it as long as ten days of wrong way detours before it wil get back on its right migration path.
Was a pretty cool article. So now I gonan get a buterfly net to see if I can se e fi any of these sgragglers coming in the yard might have a childs sticker on them.
it a good idea really, can maybe hep detrmine how many Monarchs actually make it back to their winter migration populations. I just wonder hwo the stickers stay on if the butterflies get caught in a rain storm?
Anybody checking their Monarchs?
I guess Monarchs are cyclical in our place (Southwest Riverside County). About two years ago, there was a migration of Monarchs going North from their winter homes. Since then I haven't seen a single Monarch. At the place that I bought my asclepias fascicularis from (Las Pilitas Nursery), they were able to raise one Monarch butterfly on the nursery grounds.
Perhaps Spring 2008 will bring surprises!! Believe me, if I see any Monarchs carrying any email addresses, I will be on the computer immediately!!
Have a nice day!!
Thanks,
Chuck
