Ok, I'm not doing something right, can someone help me? My leaves are turning silvery in the middle on different potted hibiscus in my backyard. The ones in the ground are not showing this problem, so I don't know if that helps or not. Also, one thing to note is that they get a fertilizer with the lower middle number each week (no more than 1x a week) and they were treated with Ortho Big-B-Gone about a week and a half ago due to a whitefly problem I found. Will this silvery leaf thing go away? Is there something I need to do for these babies?
Having some hibiscus issues, help?
Also, another problem that I've found on my hibiscus is this slightly darker green veigns in the leaves of some of my Rum Runners and 2 of my Schizo's in the ground than the rest of their leaf. I do fertilize them regularly as mentioned above and all of my plants get daily watering. The temps are still hot around here, too. Help?
I'm leaving this one to the experts. I'm too new at this to have a clue :*(
The silvery leaf could be spider mites--doesn't quite look like the typical damage I see on leaves from them but it's worth checking the underside of the leaf just in case (look for really teeny tiny brownish red dots). It's probably something else though.
The yellowing leaves could just be from changes in watering--a lot of my hibiscus leaves are like that now because the weather got cooler and we've had some rain. Probably not the case for you if your weather hasn't changed, but figured it was worth mentioning. If it's water/weather, the affected leaves will keep getting yellower and probably some of them will fall off eventually. The other possibility is chlorosis from not enough iron--if your soil pH is alkaline, even if there is iron present in the soil the plant can't absorb it. Just from looking at them, I think this is more likely, my yellowing leaves caused by water/weather are more of a bright yellow color than yours are.
Hey Amanda,
It almost appears that the leaves are scorched. Cant say for sure though. When the ortho was applied was it early morning or evening? The oily base sometimes can act like cooking oil even in the heat and burn or scorch the leaves. It should clear up. These will eventually drop off and new ones will grow. For white flies try dawn detergent. Since there were no fly larve on the leaves they were probably looking for a good place to live for a while. I suggest the ortho systemic if at all possible, but only use it for more severe insects. One time months ago when I did use the bug be gone it did the exact same thing and burned the leaves on my cupcake. They have since grown back. As for the RR it looks like you may need to add iron. be sure that your fertilizer has micronutrients and if you do add an iron suppliment do it very sparingly. Hope this helps.
Ok, thank you guys for the iron info ... I'm going to do that!
Sounds like you're right about the leaves being scorched. I did look under the leaves adn couldn't see anything wrong at all, the undersides are perfect. No more whiteflies either, so the ortho got rid of those. I guess I'll have to be more careful when applying Ortho. I applied it in the afternoon, not quite evening.
How do I find out about micronutrients and what do I do to add iron (fertilizer spikes or something?)?
Texas Gardening: Epsom Salts
Lot's of information about the micronutrients on this thread. Maybe something that could help you.
I found it, thank you!! :)
