I must confess that I've been fascinated by the thought of seeing Laurie's pictures of her historical cottage. And I find the name Burwash Weald a very romantic-sounding location. Put that together with the fact that Laurie has told me herself that her houds is just a few fields over from the house in which that very famous writer, Rudyard Kipling, lived and and Internet obsession is born.
Thought I'd share with you guys some of the general stuff I'd found.
Where is Sussex? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sussex
What does Burwash Weald look like (though they don't show the hardware store)? http://www.villagenet.co.uk/esussex-iron/villages/burwashweald.php
http://www.solarnavigator.net/history/batemans.htm
And here's our literary legend, Rudyard Kipling. Some of his stories (Puck of Pook's Hill) are set in the very countryside in Sussex in which our friend, Laurie lives!! http://212.74.5.57/Jkipling.htm
Now if that isn't enough to make us all want to hop on a bus and go over for a visit, I don't know what is!!
So here's a picture of the East Sussex Countryside:
So What Do You Know About Sussex
And here's a picture I found of the Sussex Coast:
With some more Sussex history:

The decisive Battle of Hastings was fought not far from here:

Okay, I'll stop now. Happy reading!!
Oh my word! I had no idea that there was so much on Burwash Weald available (in BW we do only have the Pub - and an antique clock restorer) - we do have to go into Burwash proper for the 12 stores - including the hardware store, and the smithy!
But seeing it here is astounding - it's quite an odd sensation. Katie, that's really touching. So - now where do we locate a bus?
I just came across this page - this is the second hand tool shop near by. I love this place. Second only to the nursery.

Oh my, treasures everywhere! Not too much that would fit in a suitcase though. lol
That's is fascinating, Kathy
And you to Laurie, now the more I want to go.. The movie I watched was "Lion Heart" it Was so good and have watch it over and over and I love some of the scenery in it. soooo wonderful.
What is sad, I love wide open spaces, Montana, Wyoming and the Eastern side of Washington. I have always been a country girl, and now I live in the forest. What happen with that????? I fell in love with a man. O,my But now Its my Kingdom.
I have no idea where this just came from. Yes I am rattling on. Sorry Nite Nite.
And yes I am still looking for the purple bus.
Oh, I don't know katymac, a few hand tools, maybe a good billhook or two - unless we're talking about carry-on - although I've never met an american who can travel with just carry-on. I've always wondered what they put in those suitcases? Oh, I know - gardening tools! silly me.
Tilly, that is Outdoor Man!! Definately.
Okay, Laurie, your post made me smile. Several years ago I was at the ocean on a weekend vacation with some girlfriends and our dogs. In the evenings, we would play Boggle (build words on one-anothers' words for points). I used the word "hillock" and the girls challenged me. Don't know what books I must have been reading, but certainly it wasn't the books they had been reading. Anyway, it's a joke now between us all - they don't "challenge" my Boggle words so readily now.
Some of those stories about events in Sussex really get your imagination going. They seem larger than life and then you remember that those historical figures were just doing what they felt they had to do to get by. Not so much different than we do now.
Tilly, your post made me smile as well. I NEED the trees and feel naked in the wide-open spaces, as beautiful as they are. Always sure that somebody miles away can see me . . . Sounds, though, like you need to take that man with you for a getaway.
Been trying always something always gets in the way or maybe next year, Who's going to watch the furry and feathered kids, and on, and on, and on, >>>>>>
oH I think I have forgot to add to the 4 cats and 2 dogs I also have 2 Cockatiels.(spelling even spell check didnt help)
need anymore nice english words?
Love the "English" words. Keep it up Laurie! :0) They are great for playing Scrabble too!
Always. I'm such a romantic at heart. Keep 'em coming, Laurie.
Thinking that I might live at "Sparrow's Weald". What do you think?
Ohhhhh, nice one Katie. Very good.
I'm just finishing up a wonderful biography on Thomas Bewick an 18th C. woodengraver, famous for his engravings of Birds - might be worth locating his illustrations of sparrows. Also, well worth reading if you are interested in England and english nature (as in birds and stuff, not as in the character of...) Terribly well written, author is Jenny Uglow. (Great name, isn't it?) Beautiful production in paperback.
I love that sparrows are underappreciated - makes the name even more special. I'll look for info on Thomas Bewick - can't imagine engraving wood . . .
I picture you in the tub with your garden magazines surrounding you. Now where shall I picture you reading your biographies? LOL
Big wind here last night brought down many leaves. The big leaf maples are beautiful and I think of everybody when I see them. I'll have a bunch in my yard, just need to gather them to compost. I never know if I should start now or wait until they're all down. There's tons more to go. I should try to get a picture . . .
take my advice: get them before they blow away.
Besides, it's easier to gather smaller amounts.
Whatever - don't let them escape!!!
Oh - with a little rain, they're all nestled in for the winter. I keep looking for local garden crews to tell them they can drop their leaves at my house. Haven't caught anybody yet. Supposed to have some big winds tonight - so we'll get started on getting the other 1/2 of the leaves onto the lawn.
