You are not going to believe what happened to my Yard!

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Hi everyone.
The other day Lynn calls and wonders if my yard is big enough for a greenhouse. (Every spring we use her atrium to start and bring along our plants. This summer she made a few changes and her atrium is now a super living space)
I check with my hubby and he says yes. Sooooooooooo here is the result.
This is the start of the project.

The continued story...
Lynn has been watching the RION greenhouses that were on Costco.ca and they had come on sale.
This one is 8X16 and in talking about it we decide that 1/2 on the vegie garden and the other half on the lawn would mean that in the spring when everything is planted out the tomatoes and peppers/melons could be planted straight into the soil in the geenhouse.

In looking at the instructions and the website we found that many details were not explained very well. My hubby perservered( along with some chopped knuckles and a few XXXXX words) and we are almost done. We comondered 6 neighbors and lifted the roof on at about 5 pm on Saturday . He feels it is very well designed and that it was a neat experience after all now that we can see how nice it looks.
After two weekends of many discussions and building, the green house was to this stage on the afternoon of Monday, our day of thanksgiving and I truly thank Lynn for this opportunity.
I will keep you updated on what happens. We have put our patio table and chairs in there for now to enjoy the outdoor living.

Lucky Lady.

That is awesome. You will love it. Does it have an auto vent system?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Well, looks like I will have a veggie garden the size of a city block. I will need to figure out what to do with this large plot.

Hey M
Thanks
This came by Costco.ca it wasn't at the store. Lynn got it online.
The delivery was free and it came in 10 big boxes via UPS.
It looks like you are in the same zone as me. Is it fall for you too?

Your tree is fabulous!
If you do get the green house let me know and we can give you some hints that are not in the instruction's. We did things the hard way.
I will keep my fingers crossed for your Santa wish.

What a beautiful picture!!

Ann I was just visiting a friend who also bought agreenhouse from Costco - same as yours I guess and said it took them 18 hours I think to put it up instead of 6 or something similar. Instructions were poor and at some point they had to take apart everything they had put together because instructions were out of order.

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

All I can do is sit here and smile .. cuz if I thought too hard on the past few 'put it together fiascos' I myself have had .. I'd be cryin in me beer ( or milk)

In two of my attempts at self made .. parts were missing .. both things being put toether , one a computer desk and the other a 5 drawer dresser .. came from Canadian Tire .. ergo the nickname for Canadian Tire in these parts (Crappy Tire).
I revisited the CostCo site .. looked at Ann's pics again .. and am toying with the idea of having someone do the job for me .. DH would NOT be amused with a task like that .. besides .. it's hunting season now .. and .. the world as I know it comes to a screeching halt until Dec. 12. What with the unemployment situation here .. I may just luck out .. at any rate .. I'm going to put some feelers out ..I do have a greenhouse (of sorts) that is totally ramshacled despite a new paint job .. cleaning it out and replacing the windows etc would be futile I think.

Glad ya liked the purdy trees .. they're bare nekkid now :-(

Take care all

I am luck as my DH puts things together(race car engines) for a business so he is very focused and did take the time to research on the Rion website for hints/tips on the build.
We did the build just as the book said with putting down the base then building the roof then the sides. I then ran around the neighborhood looking for tall neighbors to help lift the 8X16 foot roof over the walls and connect all the posts.
Also my DH made some tools to assist in snapping some of the bits together as my hands wore out and I couldn't squeeze anymore. All in all it was a lesson in patience , any lego lover would be fine with this type of project. I also think if it was too cold the plastic could be at risk when you snap it together.
It is a super unit and the construction of the building is very strong , we had 70 km winds the other day and it didn't go anywhere.
If anyone wants any advice just ask and I would be happy to answer any questions or take close ups of the parts or joints.
We even started to use it with our patio table and chairs are inside so my daughter and her friends did their homework in it yesterday.
I will keep you posted.
Cheers

Thanks for all the info Ann .. my DH is a firefighter .. chances are he'd do a fine job of burning up the boxes so he wouldn't have to help erect the greenhouse :-)

I did find 2 pics of my greenhouse (Mouse Condo, Chipmunk Retreat)
Be a big job cleaning it out .. needs windows replaced etc ..

1 pic ..

As you can tell .. it'd be a task and a half .. it has a dirt floor .. and .. call me nuts .. but SPIDERS .. maybe not big ol mean & vicious spiders .. but .. spiders none the less .. and I just HATE"EM!!!

It looks like it would be just fine for using. The windows look like they are fine too as I can see through them! As for a mouse condo , couldn't you just put a cat in there for a bit?
I didn't have anything till this and was doing the window sill and lights in the basement thing.
I will be trying some of the winter sowing that some of Daves folks do this winter. I have heard of some good results and that would be one more item I won't have inside my house.
LOL

Ughhhhhhh! Spiders! I understand completely Marilynne.

I'm trying right now to make myself coexist peacefully with a spider in my bathroom - but only because I've noticed that since he moved in there have been no signs of other even more horrible insects in there, like earwigs! As long as he stays on the ceiling, and isn't actually a she that starts multiplying, he can stay. The first time he shows up on the wall or the floor, or I see baby spiders, he's a goner.

Marilynne,

For the mouse problem, you could put a few urinal cleaning/deoderizing pucks in the greenhouse. Mice hate the smell.

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

WOW .. :-) Thanks so much for all the advice and suggestions .. I smile a mile and am so very appreciative ..

I hear ya on the 'space factor' and seedilings etc in the house .. we live in a ranch style home .. corefloor/slab .. so .. even though the nest is empty .. the bedrooms are taken up with other things and the garage .. commonly referred to by me as 'Fibber McGee's Closet' is totally another NON place for me ..

We have a 'Habitat for Humanity' store here that sells all kinds of cast off from folks .. hundreds of doors and windows etc .. so I think that'd be my best bet were I to re furbish the greenhouse .. I have a bud who really does not mind spiders .. so perhaps she'll sally forth into the greenhouse and make the initial swath through for me ..

Ahhh yes .. the cat .. we have one .. Smokey .. he be the BOSS MAN .. and could give a tinker's darn about mice!! Our Westie however is another story .. she just goes BALLISTIC when she smells one .. her prowess at catching them is another story :-)

Lotsa food for thought in this forum ..

Thanks bunches

Lucky you!

Great place to spend time as the weather cools down.

see i am crazy like fox - some assembly required - that's the phrase that scares the daylights out of me but if you huck finn somebody else's significant other and yard into doing the work you have a greenhouse without the hassle

however i didn't dare go near ann's yard for a while and when i did i brought a cold six pack
