UH OH.....gonna be a mess
Ah, yes, and with that little EE looking on!
Yes they will..I have a bunch of little Mirandas EE's and another type EE's growing right in my yard...I didn't want to run the mower over them darlings...so I pulled them out planted them with the sugarcanes...until i can pot them up..lol...
You know, I've rescued a good number of little EEs from the lawnmower; it's amazing how many I've found springing up, sometimes years after I've forgotten that I had planted one in that spot once upon a time. Oh, and around my potting area and old soil dump area are favorite places to look for wayward EEs. My son helps me too, running up to me to tell me he's found an "escapee"!
LOL.. my son did that too but he says... Here is another runaway!!!
Whoa, back up and tell us about the sugar cane. I know it grows around here because I have seen it being sold off the back of pickups beside the road. Are you going to keep it in the tub? Won't it get huge? Do you have any pictures of what it will look like? This sounds like another curiousity I may need to try. TIA
That is so cool. I never thought about growing sugar cane. Now I want to try that also. Where do I get sugar cane? I need a bigger place!lol
Please post pictures as it grows.
Linda
yeah im with ardesia and jltbaw. i want some! where did you get them? ardesia, where have you been seeing these around here?
An old guy sells them off the back of a pickup in Frogmore. I haven't seen any this year, I remember seeing him there around November in previous years.
Wait until you see them now.....These are called Pele's Pete Smoke purple leaf sugarcane...mouthful there.. I ...LOL..Here is a pic of them before the rainstorm way back when knocked them over..They are nearly 10 feet tall here now.
The pic was taken on July 29 2007.. They look like tall grass in that pic..LOL...
I do trade mine for other tropicals as well..lol...
whereabout is Frogmore? i gott try this stuff. i remember sucking on it when i was little, but it was already cut up into bits then. i know they have them at the SC state fair in the agricultural display
LOL, it is where Frogmore stew originated.
Frogmore is the original name for St. Helena Island; at some point the locals decided that was not the most distinguished name so it was changed to St. Helena, after the sound.
The Corners community is at the corner of Rt. 21 S. (as you are going towards Hunting Island) and MLK Blvd. There are some touristy shops at that intersection and there are often folks selling veggies off their trucks.
mmk i guess i gotta go there sometime. im still fairly new to the Lowcountry, so yeah. i never had frogmore stew
It looks like you just laid the sticks on long fibre sphagnum, is that correct? Now what will you do with the plants?
They are layered in log style in orchid moss...grow them and trade them...LOL...I am not trying to be a smart ???.. Not too many people see purple leaf sugarcanes..I even have the variegated green and white stripes sugarcane variety as well..those are not cut yet until next year...
That is just too cool. I don't know if the kind they grow around here is red or green leafed, I'll just have to try it and see what comes up.
Just long as Ya got plenty of sun and moisture..these babies will take off..which i have here..LOL...
Gotcha......
Darn it....want to trade for a log of my purple color one??? Most of them have 3 growing points on them...
Thank you, but I had better decline your kind offer. I didn't even pick up a piece of the green; we are remodeling the house and soon there will be little time for too many new plants. I have dozens of plants that have to be transplanted out of harms way before the contractors, with their big feet, come stomping around.
I am going to keep cane in mind for next year however.
ok..just remind me next year..
Is this something that can be container grown? Can it be brought indoors for the winter in 6A? What are you looking for in trade? I have some tropicals....tuberose, plumeria seedlings, I can't think right now. I also have perennials. LMK
Roxanne
would i be able to keep the canes over the winter until like late Feb/March andthen plat it, or would it die
I can trade ya..my sugarcane stays outside year around..Ya can wait until next year to get some..I have plenty here...it can be container grown but it will need a big pot!
thanks d-mail me and we can discuss it further
