Trying to figure this out. If I request someone's "Have", do I have to have something they "Want"? Or do people just send/ receive from anyone who Has/Wants?
For example: If someone wants a butterfly bush start from me, do I have to take a plant from them. Of if someone has tomato seeds I want, do I have to have seeds that same person wants?
Pam
very new newbie
Trade only with 1 person?
A lot of time people will send for postage...I have sent a lot of seeds just for postage.....
I think that it's always polite to offer something in exchange if I want something that another has. But it's also ok to simply say please and accept the whatever or refusal of whatever for simply postage. You can always give without an exchange or simply for sase.

I look through Want lists and offer seeds for postage. I have them, why not share? I have received seeds that way, too. I believe it all evens out in the end.
Pam asked:

No, you do not. You can D-mail the other member to inquire about the current availability of the material listed in that member's HAVE trading list. Explain that you do not have anything listed in the member's WANT trading list but would like to invite the other member to browse your own HAVE trading list to see if there is something there that strikes the other person's fancy - - else, ask their permission to send an SASE/SABE for seeds.
Or do people just send/ receive from anyone who Has/Wants?
No to that part as well. Nobody must trade. Nobody is required to accept plants, cuttings, tubers, roots or seeds they do not want. Nobody is compelled to supply them to anyone else.
For example: If someone wants a butterfly bush start from me, do I have to take a plant from them.
No.
Of if someone has tomato seeds I want, do I have to have seeds that same person wants?
Yes. When tomato seeds are wanted, you canna have 'em if you gots nuthin' I wants fer ta trade.
Hey! I am just kidding! The answer, again, is No.

Good one Lazlo!
Wooconley, Would it be tomaters you're lookin' for then? ;)
I actually have no idea what I want! I just moved from Louisiana to Ohio and although I'm originally form Indiana, I'm a newbie gardener. I was starting to learn some stuff about the deep south but most of the things I had there don't grow here - except as house plants.
I brought a glory bower vine that's in a pig pot. It's in my living room and starting to drop leaves. I know it does that every year even in the south so I'm not worried. I'm planning on putting it on my deck next summer.
The house we're buying has a few things planted but the yard etc has been neglected for several years. I'm not sure what I have, what condition it's in etc.
I know that I have a blank canvas. But do I use oils or watercolors, paper or duck cloth, big brush or little???
Because I couldn't wait, I bought a clematis, 2 tall garden phlox and 2 coreopsis and planted them where I think they might stay.
Well, Louisiana to Ohio is a big change. I would think that alot of the plants you left out all year round there will have to be brought inside in zone 6. I am in a zone colder than yours, but I would suggest getting started on perennials that you like, or annuals that re-seed. It can be expensive investing in plants when you are not yet familiar with your landscape or tastes. I moved into a new house with NO landscaping 4 years ago, so I know where you are. But the good news is, in about 3 years the plants you start next year will fill out and get huge.
Make sure you leave room. LOL . I have spent so much time moving plants, I can't even begin. LOL
I have a lot of perennial seeds and veggie seeds I would be happy to share. Just let me know.
I have not started a trade journal and that reason can be summed up in one word.... L-A-Z-Y!!
I do save seeds from what I have and would be happy to share. Most are perennials that are easy to take care of. When moving into a new house that is really important. Cyndie
I looked at your photos of your house. Great looking place. I like the style. Your back yard looks very similar to mine. ;)
The plant on your fence that you thought might be a weed looks like a columbine. They do well in shady places.
Oh well. I believe that area gets mostly full sun. I think maybe the maples shade it late afternoon early evening. But cool. If they don't do well there I can move them further down where the trees shade starting earlier.
