keeping a pen clean.....

Howell, MI

I started a couple weeks ago with 10 ducks.....bought 4 but given 9.....1 died....so we were at 18 this weekend....until our neighbor showed up with 4 more....lol.....I had her talk to my husband so that he would be the one to say no......as soon as he heard 1 was laying eggs - he said SURE! What's 4 more!?!? So - our count is now 22 ducks!! (I will be thinning them out though)

So - here is my question - after ONE night in a clean duck house - it is now icky again - does anyone know of a good way to help keep it clean?? I've been using straw - which doesn't really absorb anything........should I switch to shavings??? or do I just add fresh straw on top to help make it last
a couple extra days???? They're soooooo messy!!!!!!

Thanks!

Ducks are really filthy in comparison to chickens..... just my opinion from my gang.

I find pine shavings absorb a little more than straw does. Part of the problem is ducks don't scratch thru the bedding shifting it all about like chickens do so it just sits there collecting on top. Not to mention ducks toss about so much water as well.

You could try shifting it (the straw) about with a steel garden rake and see if that mixes it in a little more so it's not all collecting on top as a layer.

ooh....good idea....I'll try that!

yeah - compared to my mom's chickens - these guys are awful! however, I do outnumber her 22 to 8! lol I'll try the "shifting" to see if that will buy me an extra day or so......

thanks!
