How or what can I use to get rid of the chickens in my flower beds? They sit around all day, pecking at the green tips, and eat the flower tops off all my hostas.
chickens eating my flowers!!
Fence the flowers :))
chickens can fly! We have them penned in the back and they fly over and free range up to the house. any othe suggestions?
Rootstown, A 6 ft welded wire fence is generally gonna keep chickens from flying over the top ........ unless; 1) they have too little feed in the chicken run 2) they're Game Fowl. The cure is get a higher fence or clip their wings a bit or have big fat chickens like; Orpington, Wyandottes, Welsumer, NJ Giants, Cochin. Our free ranging Game Fowl do the same. I have to fence off my flowers. Any of the Leghorn, Hamburg, Spitzhauben, Minorcas, Fresian variety of chickens can fly almost as well as pheasants. Stay away from the breeds with white lobes on their heads the others generally can't fly well. Welded or woven wire fencing sells for $1/ft. I highly recommend the 6ft woven wire fencing in 100ft or 200ft rolls.
Mine were fine in 6 foot, as well. I had Turkens (my favorites) Lackenvelders, several other medium breeds, and assorted bantams. Most were content not to exert themselves. There was a silver leghorn (as photographer said) who went over a time or two, but generally they had enough plants and bugs to keep them busy. Maybe yours just like the garden better :)
If mine are let out to free range they demolish every plant in site !!

I was having problems with my chickens and turkeys flying over my fence and scratching around in my beds. They were tearing up my dianthus, strawberry plant, fescue, and allyssum. So, I clipped the wings of the guilty ones and haven't had a problem since.
broncbuster, Turkeys flying sounds almost like waiting for pigs to fly. Our turkeys are 50-60 lbs so they can barely walk ... let alone fly.
