How many bring plants in 4 the winter & do you treat for pes

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

do you texas people bring your plants in and if so do you treat
for insects etc....; last year i naively? just brought mine in and did nothing...
do insects etc live in plants soil that i am not seeing?

one plant that i am concerned with bringing in and am told it
is quite tempermental is my gardenia....; should i spray it with
something to get rid of insects? my bedroom happens to be
right off the sunroom so i don't want to be sleeping with
snakes & spiders....

Sticks ~ If I bring pots in, I knock them out of the pot and make sure there are no centipedes, ants or snakes in the bottom of the pot. You might also want to inspect the plant by looking at the stems and undersides of the leaves. Looking mainly for things that could spread to the other plants you bring in. I no longer bring many in. Move them to the enclosed back porch or plant shelter instead.

SNAKES?? @@...what do you knock out of the pots? the pests? i must have 40 to 50 pots that i will be bringing in....a funny farm

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm sorry Sticks~ Turn the pot upside down and gently remove the plant from the pot. The root system should hold the plant and soil together. Check the base of the plant and the inside of the pot for boogers. LOL 40 - 50 pots? You better get busy! lol

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

with one arm??(grin)

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Are you still one armed? I am sorry. What the heck do you have in 40-50 pots. Any friends or neighbor kids you could recruit?

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

i am not 'suppossed' to use it; i have to wait till halloween...then we xray it again(yes halloween)...if the bone is growing then i not sure what to do...if not...(which is the reason why i am in this predicament) i have to put some sort of machine on it that stimulate bone growth...4-6 hours a day....

i do have a hubbie i could recruit....he will be 'happy' to help me...NOT

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I would come help you but there is no way I could travel across miles and miles of Texas... wish we were closer.
I had hoped for some treatment that could be added to the water when I water the plants that would remedy the pest problem before bringing in. But there is nothing that wouldn't also kill the plants.
If you place them on shelving or the floor, you might use a bug spray to cover the surfaces that the plants will sit on. That way, you shouldn't have to take them out of the pots and check the roots for creepy crawlies. Snakes are probably not as much of a concern there and sorry I mentioned them. I also use a little red wagon to doodle the pots in or out. Makes toting them easier.

What all are you growing? Lots of tropicals and coleus?

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

ee's, gingers, helonica, gardenia, grasses, coleus, begonias, impatiens, ferns, ivies, bougenvillas, polkadots, fan flower, amaryllis, alternanthera....geranium..crinum..hibiscus.hearts& flowers...a couple of cactus looking things...spv...lilies....russian violet.......it is getting to be a jungle...i am missing some i know but here is some..

okay tho, you have gardened longer than me...when i was first starting i wanted to keep everything...didn't want to lose it to the cold...then someone said that doing cuttings is better cause they produce stronger plants etc...and you start over...is that your experience?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I am not good at starting plants by cuttings. I have learned tho that many plants I would bring in did not need to come in. Some even stayed evergreen outside over winter and some looked better and became sturdier to be left outdoors. As my space and time are limited, I select one to save and the others may be left out and covered with a sheet during a cold spell. If I lose it ~ oh well. I did save one of that type of plant. This plant/gardening thing can get out of hand quickly... lol
Cuttings would sure take up less space for you.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

you are warmer there than i am...; but yes i can see it get out of hand quite quickly...; i have my closed store where i can take a bunch (thank god)....last year i took asparagus fern, geranium, ivys, spvs; it got down to 20 degrees in the building...i wasn't about to heat it...they all lived and none froze....

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

That could be a business ~ rent out plant storage space, provide lighting, heat and charge for the service... Hmmmmmm

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

oh no you don't....(grin)

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

are you not working today? as in a job where people pay you ? as in something i need to be looking for?
as in i am doing everything i can not to find one?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Never work on Mondays ~ at least for others. I work all day Saturday so I can play hooky on Monday. The down side ~ Tuesdays become Monday ~ grrrr....

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

yep i hate that...

I used to put moth balls in my plants about a week or two before I brought them in. Poked them down into the soil. It ran all the boogers out. Since they were under the soil, they didn't smell. The cedar scented ones will work, also. They were also great for crawdad holes in the yard.

Annette ~ hadn't thought about that. No ill effects on your plants when they got watered?

A year ago we had our pond enlarged at it had gone dry. The dozer operator told us he thought the crawdads caused it. He found arm sized holes in the soil. He suggested that we drop mothballs in the smaller holes around the edges but I was apprehensive as my dogs swim and drink it. There are also many shorebirds (no stocked fish at this time). I would like to know there would be no long term effects.

Sticks ~ have you gotten them moved in yet? Have you been looking for gainful employment yet? Are you still with us?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

You know you got the prayers ~ girl.

Thanks for the pond compliment ~ in fact, Pod is the one coming out of the water. He loves it and will paddle around just for the sheer joy of swimming.

New Waverly, TX(Zone 8b)

Podster~
No ill effects on the plants, but I can't answer about putting them around the pond. My dogs never dug up the crawdad holes. We just dropped a moth ball down and sealed the hole. I was told that when the moth ball hit the water, it would create a gas that would kill the crawdad. Beyond that, your guess is a good as mine!
