Sibling to Autumn Treaure - A Nice Yellow

Crumpler, WV

The following pictures are of a seedling that is a pod mate to Autumn Treasure. We all know that Autumn Treasure has a nice yellow bloom in the summer, then turns that brillant orange in cooler weather.

Well, this brug just is YELLOW!! The pictures that show the blooms as a very bright yellow are its summer blooms. The other pictures are of its fall blooms, which looks to still be a really nice yellow, just not as bright as the summer blooms. We all know that the fall blooms are, as a general rule, lighter than the summer blooms.

Hopefully this brug will be released soon, just have to wait until the paper work is finalized.

Enjoy the pictures!!

Last picture for tonight. These pictures of the fall blooms are pics of the first night, so the color should develop more over the next couple of days. As it does I'll post updated pictures. And the fragrance it nice, a light citrus scent.

I would like 2 of those, David. :) Such a wonderful bright yellow; it has to be the guiding star in your garden. Good luck with your new creation!

She is a very nice, crisp, clean yellow. Very pretty!! Congratulations!!
Cannot let my 10 year old daughter see this picture though, because she'd be all over it! Can you tell her favorite color is yellow? :)

Very nice! Intense color.. I love it! Congratulations David, we need more yellow!

Truly a lovely yellow, David. Bravo!
When I get some pollen from The Chief, I'll send some.

It would be nice to have a smaller, yellow, multi-bloomer.

Well everyone, this brug did not stay the clear, bright, lemon yellow that I was hoping that it would. It is just like its pod mate 'Autumn Treasure', yellow during the summer and orange in the fall. I was so hoping that it would stay yellow, but it was not meant to be with this cross. I don't know what it is with yellow brugs, almost every one that I have grown or know of, gets a hint of orange in its fall blooms. The only one that I know of personally that does not get an orange tint to them in the fall is Whiskers. And Whiskers is the pollen parent to this cross.

And I have come to the conclusion that it is not cool temperatures in the fall that causes Autumn Treasure, its sister, or some of the other yellow/orange brugs, to turn orange or a darker shade of orange in the fall. Because we have had summer time temps (mid 80's to near 90 degrees F) during the development and opening of these blooms. I truly believe that it has to do with the amount of daylight and darkness.

My wife and I have decided to still give this seedling the original name that was chosen for it, even though it did develop the orange color. My DW had came up with a very fitting name for it, but because the color orange has a correlation to the chosen name, it will stay the same. I plan to reveal the name once I hear back from one of the people who are helping to evaluate the seedling.

Liz, I am so disappointed that this seedling did not stay a true yellow. I would have rather that the bloom become a very light yellow in the fall than develop the orange color. But hey, we need more good yellow and oranges. Most people have been on a pink kick for many years now, its time to change.

Here are a couple of pictures.

It is still very pretty.

Hi David...I understand. We make Herculean efforts to produce plants that perform in accordance with our vision of what we would like them to be. But, the great leveling factor (and perhaps one more valuable than we know) is the secret code locked within each of our creations. They will become what THEY wish to become. I never become disappointed with an outcome. Whether the resulting bloom conforms to my vision for it or not, I can celebrate success or hand an outstandingly beautiful plant to a delighted neighbor or stranger. Everyone wins.

As far as The Chief is concerned, it blooms yellow and stays yellow, but it has stamina and reproduction problems. As I mentioned, I'm on the third season with one and am gradually learning it, looking for common ground that will benefit us both and eventually, perhaps come to delight others. It is terribly hot here, and all Brugs suffer during the Summer. A few, like Isabella, Jean Pasco, Pink Beauty and (surprisingly) Mountain Magic hold their own before busting loose in the Fall. Most of the others struggle through Summer, then cut loose in the Fall. So, it is a matter of patience, appreciation and observation that make the growing experience worthwhile. The Chief likes it shady in the Summer and sunny in the Fall and Winter, so it must be pot grown and mobile. Reproduction is a delicate matter, but not impossible - better done in the Fall when it is happy and temps run between 75 and 80 degrees - and the mix has to be light and damp, not wet.

In general, this hidden process is unknown to Brug afficianados who don't actively hybridize. For those of us who do dabble in the madness, it is a way of life, a process, a philosophy of sorts that sustains us through the knowing and growing. One cannot view all of it in a healthy way unless the constraints of time and our own finite biology are dismissed...a psychological discipline. One simply cannot be anxious about outcomes and fully enjoy the experience.

Your plant is a marvel. In the right garden, tended by the right gardener, it will become a refuge - and that is the best we can wish or accomplish for those we care for.

Congratulations! Bravo!

It's awesome david, I like it cause the flower on this opens up all the way, which 'Autumn Treasure' didnt at least for me. I dont have 'Autumn Treasure' anymore I lost it this past spring when I was in the hospital........ DH forgot to water it!

xomed28 and Elva,

thanks for your kind comments about this brug. It is still a very pretty brug. And Elma, the blooms on Autumn Treasure do not open fully like a "normal" brug, this is its only negative attribute. This brug S-AT-LA # 1, which is a pod mate to Autumn Treasure, is a much better brug over all, except that AT is much more fragrant than S-AT-LA # 1.

Liz, truly those of us who hybridize with the intent to "CREATE", a new cultivar put forth a tremenous amount of effort, in the hopes that our attempts will come to fruition according to our wishes. Most of the time the results are not what we wanted, but is it a waste of time and resources? The answer is NO!!

Plus those who hybridize, with the knowledge of the parents, grandparents and so forth, do so with the "perception" that we fairly well know what the cross will bring forth, however we cannot truly know the outcome. As you stated, they will be what they will be; the secret code remains just that, a secret. But it is through our attempts to break the code, that brings us the joy of seeing a new seedling bloom for the first time.

And some VERY good news. My fellow evaluator has informed me that his plant is still blooming yellow. Here is an excerpt from his email to me today.

"Hi David,
S-AT-LA#1 has stayed consistently the bright yellow as in the pictures I sent you. I have'nt seen even a hint of orange in the blooms. I have a few blooms on it now and they are that bright lemon yellow."

It is very possible that the cuttings supplied to me from the original seed parent contained cuttings of more than one brug. So there is a great deal of hope that we will still have a true yellow available to us. It will just take another year, maybe two to confirm that fact. Got my fingers crossed and hoping and praying.

What ever happened to this Brug? Was it ever released and if so, under what name? I love yellows!
