I know it came from Houston, but I cant remember the name of the person who gave it to me. He also gave me the tree. He was at Collage Station last spring with his mother. The vine is very fine and has thes cute little red flowers on it that glisten. The vine dont appear to wander ... I dont think.
Anyone recognize this?
Cypress Vine
Mitch Its look like a Cypress too, thanks. Will it grow here? it was in pot with the tree he gave me.
no - but let the seeds fall and they will live here year after year for ever.... and ever... and ever...
It is in the morning glory vein and if they go to seed you can replant and they love it.
Thanks... did you see the other one? it looks like a aster.
Mitch do you know what the tree is called?
My guess would be mimosa - or china berry... or one of the (spelling here might be off..) Jacardas
Sylvia, I saw that plant at the Rose Emplorium and wanted to buy some. What I saw was growing in their display garden. They told me that they don't sell it anymore because they got so many complaints from customers, because it invaded everywhere! Are you sure you want that? It's really pretty, but it's going to be really pretty all over everything.
No Mitch, Its not a Mimosa ... will take a pic tonight.
Marylee the vine is a pot now... is it a shade plant or do it like the sun?
Sun - and water.
OK - lets keep checking.. some more pics.
It reseeds and spreads everywhere. I started with one plant 4 years ago, and now it grows all over my fence and flower beds. It doesn't seem to hurt anything, and I love both the flowers and the foliage, so I let it grow and just pull up the "extras." But a lot of people don't want something that reseeds so prolifically.
I love it too... I dont mind it running everywhere. :) Diamndsnjns How did you get yours to mound like that? Its beautiful and it look like a Christmas tree. :)
City_Sylvia, the Cypress Vine is pretty foliage with gorgeous blooms BUT, WATCH OUT, if you plant it in the ground it can and will, if not kept trimmed, spread fast. Speaking from experience, I had one that covered my bench swing (8'tall x12'long frame) and when I found out that each bloom pod had 6 to 8 seeds that were dropping them everywhere I went ahead and cut it out and dug it up. That was 4 years ago and I'm still finding seedlings starting up in my beds and in the grass around the swing.
I love it and am planing to get another but will keep the next one in a pot with a trellis and trimmers close by. ;o)
Kip
Humming birds LOVE these flowers. I have this in a pot growing on a trellis and the hummers visit it constantly when it is blooming. I Love this vine.
I would love to put mine on a trellis in a pot. Do this plant climb on its own?
Yes, it climbs on its own. And my first one was in a pot, with a tomato cage and fence to climb on. It deserted the pot long ago. Grows all over my fence, all through the wisteria, and all over the flower beds. I just let it go. But it's not hard to pull up if you want to.
Patti I would love that too! Those little red flowers twinkle like Chirstmas tree lights. :)
awww Patti that is awsome. I hope i can find the seeds in my pot.
Sylvia, is the tree maybe one of the China Dolls that Smockette brought up for you?
Nott!!!
I've been watching this thread & that thought crossed my mind but the rest of these are 6-8' tall and NOTT half the diameter of this one.
I'm going to C_S on Fri b4 Randol Mill & will ck it out in person!!!
:~)
Sylvia, I never found any in the pot. I saved a few off the vine and planted them the next year. And yeah, they came up, but so did lots of others. :)
If you can't find any seeds, I have some, and I think others are bringing them to the swap too.
It will be great to see you again Linda!
Sheila What tree are you talking about? Why did you have to mention those China Doll trees? Now you have gone and made Linda mad at me! Are your trees still living? lol
My one tree is still living, but the web worms have eaten the leaves. I take it your's aren't? Or did you plant them and don't remember where? LOL!
Sheila ... lets not go there! lol
