Ampelopsis brevipedunculata - Porcelain Vine

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Is anyone having problems with it in Canada? I still have it in a pot because I've been scared to plant it here. Opinions, please.

I do luv the different colors of the berries.

For some areas its like a weed:

Grows well in newfoundland but we never get ripe fruit since our season is too short. I am growing a variegated version which is lovely without fruit.

Todd how do you think it would do in Calgary with our short growing season?

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Hard to say....your growing season is actually longer than ours as most years you have a spring. But then, you have a killing frost earlier than us. But then, you have hotter summers, but much colder winters. Bottom line, go for it! You never know until you try. The main thing, are they hardy in zone 3b?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Dont care if they are hardy - just thinking about treating as an annual.

Carol are you talking about wanting to go the variegated one or the regular one? Todd the variegated one would be lovely to grow.

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

I would never think of growing one as an annual!

Just a thought Todd!

I have a new pergola with 3 posts and I do intend to grow clematis there but was thinking maybe next year to just grow annual vines. Somebody gave me seed for Chilean Glory Vine and another suggestion is Silver Lace Vine.

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Silver Lace survives outside here. Another different annual vine is Asarina..I might have some extra seeds of that one.

Perennial Girl - I had a porcelain vine in my old garden several years ago, and I loved it for the beautiful berries in the fall - such a fantastic colour! It was planted on the north side of my garden (Zone 6a) and survived for several years or so. I think I could have prolonged it with a proper application of thick mulch. As a matter of fact, I think I might plant one next year in my new garden - I think it would do nicely with the clematis.

Thanks for the info!
