Nephew's pug mix attacked by Rottie mix

Penfield, PA(Zone 5b)

My nephew's Chug (chicuahua-pug) was attacked by a large Rottie mix today. (I have absolutely NOTHING against Rotties, just wanted to describe the size and build of the attacker) The large dog grabbed my nephew's dog by the neck and began shaking him like a chew toy. After getting the dogs apart, the small dog was bleeding from the neck. He has 2 puncture wounds. 1 on each side of his neck, just as large as a dog's tooth. He also has a 1' x 2" strip of fur missing on his shoulder. My nephew is only 13 and obviously upset. I have assured him that "Benny" will be okay. I cleaned the wounds and put antibiotic cream on them. I told him that he just needs to pay close attention to the wound sites over the next week or so to make sure they don't get infected. Do you feel this was the right thing to do, or should we have called the vet at home?

Benny is very scared and doesn't feel much like playing like he usually does, but I don't think he is in alot of pain. He didn't even flinch when I put the cream on him.

Thanks,
Staci
