wanted: YACON

mulege, Mexico

Looking for yacon crowns to plant here in Mexico. I can receive mail in the U.S. or Mexico. Yacon is grown commercially in the Phillipines and Peru. There seems to be a shortage of it in the U.S. right now so if anyone can helpl I'd appreciate it. I have some cuttings from a pretty pink plumeria and will have neem seeds and probably others to trade. Can pay for postage. Thanks for any help you can give. Katiebear

katie, I am gowing a couple of yacon plants now, and will harvest in about a month, depending on weather. I was planning on keeping the crowns myself to increase my crop next year, but might have enough to divide and share, as the plants are rather large this year. They are a challenge for me to keep going through the winter. I'd be interested in a possible trade for other unusual edibles.

krowten,

If you still have the yakon/yacon crowns for trade I am interested. I only want very small crown because this will be experiment for me. Let me know. I only have Japanese yam/sweet potato which has just started putting out sprouts and will not be ready to trade for at least 4-6 weeks. I keep the plants growing all winter and then root the cuttings in early March for April planting outside. The Japanese sweet is purple/mauve skin and white inside. It is dry flesh and taste like a chestnut.

Cheers,

Here's a pic of a yacon crown just after digging - sorry for the poor quality. This year, storage tubers were not as abundant or large as normal for me. Note the red propagation tubers vs. the brown stoarage tubers.

Ok until this post I had never heard of this plant. I am now intrigued by it and would like to know how you went about obtaining your original plant? I did not see any sources for it.
Can you also share with me how you cook with it?

Krowten - What a great picture. Thank you for posting it.

Marieortiz - Most of my information about yacon comes from rain-tree.com You can check it out. It's eaten both raw and cooked. Yacon chips are now being marketed. I have yet to find some so cannot report on any first-hand experience.
