All HD landscape stores closing!

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Went to the HD landscape store on Frankford and G. Bush this am. They were putting up large "Closing Sale everything 20-40% off" signs all over. I talked with an assistant manager; apparently HD corporate headquarters has decided to shut down all nine HD Landscape Stores. Everything is on sale, including compost, tools, rock, sand, etc..... I picked up a large camellia for $14. Three large encore azaleas $7 each. Five large salvia $3.17 each. Two bags of azalea/camellia mix 40% off. They will be dropping prices even more as the shut down accelerates.

I really like these stores because they get plants in early, large selection, employees are knowledgeable, and plants well taken care of for a big box store. I will be emailing HD corporate HQ and will consider bringing a petition to RU. However, it sounds like corporate has made up their mind (probably concerned about the mortgage crisis and forcasted continued slowing of new home sales)

I guess I did not realize that there is HD and there is also a HD landscape store. How do you tell the difference? Is the sign different or the building design?

Around here, Lowe's has a much better selection and care for their plants. However, it is nice to have the option of either one.

The HD Landscape store was a short lived phenomena. The first one was on skillman and nw Hwy in Dallas. There are currently nine in the state of Texas with most going up in 2003. see link http://www.landscapemanagement.net/landscape/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=45650

I agree, the average Lowes has better stuff than the average HD. However, HD landscape stores are awesome with tens of thousands roofed square feet devoted to plants and landscaping. Then a parking lot sized concrete area out back with trees, compost, river rock, soil you name it.

Here is a Reuters article with more info on the closing. http://www.reuters.com/article/businessNews/idUSN2043914020070920
