Is anybody a member of backyardchickens.com?
backyardchickens.com?
Not to dis the new website but www.feathersite.com is a few 1000 times larger, better .... etc. Access to Feathersite.com is free and run by Barry Koffler ? He's acknowledged worldwide as the most informed Poultryman on the planet.
I am on BYC. there is also a site that is available www.chickduckgoose.proboards81.com
All very helpful and lots to learn.
i'm a byc member also
Photographer..... does feathersite have a message board / forum that I am missing ??? I go there all the time to look up info, but I haven't found a message board on that site......which is what draws me to BYC.
I am a member at BYC and love it. It's the Dave's Garden of poultry...lol, in my opinion.

Me too! I havent been there in a while but BYC is actually the first site I ever went to about Chickies!
I never went to the Feathersite.com for chat / forum purposes. The Yahoo Groups and Google Groups to a lesser extent are where the truly hardcore chicken people congregate to discuss poultry breeds ... folks from all over the world ... famous Educators, Authors Breeders, Geneticists. Barry Koffler is a frequent contributor in one of the more longstanding Yahoo Groups. Feathersite.com is just plain enormous ..... literally a few thousand times larger than any other poultry related website and likely will be for many years to come. Most questions about chickens & poultry are answered in the topics area at feathersite.com. I'd say the only way to get a chicken or poultry photo added to Barry's site would be of one from a very rare breed of chicken; etc. Sending him your favorite cute Silkie pic .... there are millions of them worldwide just isn't gonna make an impression on Barry no matter how much you or I love them. I've traded a few emails with Barry and participated in Yahoo Group discussions to the extent that I comprehend his stature to be in the poultry elite of the world. He is in constant communication with poultry people from everywhere you can imagine. There are only 1 or 2 others in 6 billion humans with comparable knowledge. I spoke with him about 3 years ago about buying one of his Buff Wyandotte chickens. He is a really decent person. I get more than enough interaction here. The topics get a bit repetitive here but life is that way.
I think we can all agree there are many wonderful poultry sites on the net and to each their own preference on how or what they wish to get out of those sites.
Julie
i fully agree with ya julie to each our own on the sites. all are very good sites for many reasons.
Photographer
rotfl, i'm not out to impress anyone if he don't like my photography or my stock he in no way has to ever look at them again or use them and i respect anyones choice on that. all that matters is that they are breed to my expectations and satisfactions not anyone elses because i'm the breeder and exhibitionist and it's my hard work that makes or breaks what they come out to be.
he was very nice in his email and i have taken more pics for him today i just haven't had time to upload them. there was a prob with lighting in some of them before the prob was NOT with my stock. i sent him pics cause he has a breed that has few pics posted and the birds are much lesser quality than mine. it was not to put anyone down or show mine where better it was to show a different view of what they look like. i wanted them added to the site to show people the true beauty of the breed and what hard work breeding can truely bring out in them. infact he actually wrote me back asking for more pics of them and pics of the rest of my flock to see all the other breeds i have and said he looked forward to seeing more of them. i believe he is waiting on more pics to add them all at once but only he can answer that.
if he does add them to his site it will be a great honor to us not because of who barry is cause i didn't know all that, nor is it important to me. it will be because of the hard work it took us to get our babies to where they are for barry to even consider posting them and allowing them to be placed on his site for millions of people to see them. to us that is not just an honor but also comes with great respect if he is willing to display pics of our babies on his site. unless you are a true exhibitionist, poultry elite and hard core breeder with comparable knowledge i guess that wouldn't make sence cause then ya'd just be like the rest of the 6 billion humans of the world and have "cute silkies".

ps. broncbuster, why did ya want to know if there was any byc members here? is there anything there ya needed help with we can help you with? there is many of us here at daves and we'd be glad to help ya out with anything we can.
Julie, I agree as well. I just thought it unusual that someone would be plugging another website. I assumed he'd never heard of the Feathersite.com or he'd have never mentioned any other website due to the comparative difference in size and content. Certainly a chat room can be fun for those who enjoy it. Those sites tend to have very limited # of members and contributors due to the price tag. Even DG charges for membership and if DG were free ...... there'd be 1000 times as many contributors. I'm a real stay at home type ... my view is the largest plague on dear Mother Earth today is the human race.
Silkie, I just wanted to know who was on the two sights that I visit most often(no plug). Sorry for the delayed response, I don't have the net at home, only at work. Could you post some pics of your birds? I'd love to see them!
I've been raising poultry since I was 10 years of age and have always loved the yard birds. I don't go there for information, but, instead, to talk poultry with other poultry enthusiasts. I know about feathersite and, yes, it is a very informative site for beginner birders. I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers when I asked if anyonelse was on BYC, but I guess some folks' feathers are always ruffled. Especially when they view their own race as a plague. What are y'all's names on BYC?
By the way, BYC is a free site!
I plug BYC all the time suggesting folks go there and check out the info etc. I find the buy/swap/trade board to be very helpful when ppl are looking for something.
I don't feel there is anything wrong with pointing folks to other websites regarding poultry. It takes nothing away from DG as this is primarily a gardening site.
I have the same name there as here, and I think I've seen you there as well Broncbuster !!
Julie
Right you are, Julie! Nothing wrong with plugging another site, especially if it's a FREE one! The only thing I don't like is when the threads get locked over a disagreement. We don't have to worry about that here. I mean we all disagree with one person on this thread, but here it is, still going(~;
I'll check out your page over on BYC, Julie!
I've never gotten around to filling out my page.... it's on my list of things to do...lol.
I want to fill it out (makes trading easier) and load up some pics of the flock as well.
Julie
ic, these are the 2 i visit most also. no prob bronc just give me a few days to get my updated pics burned on cd at walmart so i can upload them, my ports are broke so i can't do them from the cam here.
on ez byc/yuku i'm-silkiechick on the new byc i'm-therealsilkiechick cause someone used my name. when the site went back up it didn't save our names even though they were suppost to be reserved for us....but that's ok i more lurk on that one i'm used to ez-byc.
what is ur name on them?
you didn't ruffle any feathers at all my dear so no worries.
silkie
I'm broncbuster07 on BYC. The lady who is silkiechick on BYC was just made a moderator. It's cool to know that there are others who enjoy gardening and poultry like I do. By the way, it wasn't your feathers I was talking about.
broncbuster, I don't have rufled feathers. I honestly thought BYC was a "for profit" dues required website. When money comes into the equation .... contributor numbers are greatly affected. Good to learn it is not. I get a bit suspicious about why various websites get salted on the www. Some times its just sincerity like yours. Thanks!
