Anyone growing Hyacinthoides non-scripta in Z7?

Bessemer City, NC(Zone 7b)

And I mean the real thing, true English Bluebells, not H. hispanica, not a cross between the two, or other hybrid. (Many uncaring bulb companies sell the Spanish as the English--caveat emptor.)

I just added some to my collection. I'm going to grow mine in pots this first season due to our very dry conditions now. I'll be chilling them in a refrigerator through the winter and start them in spring.

Anyone else done this?

After they bloom, I plan to plant some where I can keep them moist-ish through their dormancy.

I'm interested in success stories from anyone who has found what works for them in zone 7b and has had them returning and increasing, despite their being out of their normal climate range.

Hi Robert, hope all is well for you. I don't know the answer to your question, but I think the winter temps in your area are comparable to parts of their native range. Will daffodils and tulips rebloom for you?

Hey there!

I think the winter temps will be fine, too. I planted two pots and am considering sinking one in the ground for the winter.

Because the bulbs are so fleshy without any tunics to cover, I'm thinking that our *hot* dry summers may be one reason the bulbs may not do well here planted out, unless they can be kept moist-ish while at rest. But then too, the heat alone may be too much.......

There are a couple places with part-shade that I may try them in, but again, the intense prolonged heat worries me. It may come down to having to lift them for summer storage and storing indoors under cooler temps. Still looking for anything regarding dormant storage if you or anyone has heard anything.

Ahhh, thats what I was wondering about. I've been longing to grow English bluebells for years and am thinking I'd have the same issues.

Hope all is going well Robert. The Mickey Mouse EE you sent me has been gorgeous this summer!
