Well the blessed event happened. I heard this cheeping in the shed quite a long way (50 ft) from where the younger chickens normally wander with their mothers. I spotted one little day old chick that was very frightened due to the cold temperature. He had recently jumped out of the nest box (18 inches off the ground) and the other 9 siblings were under their mother staying warm. I put him back. I immediately readied a cage with heat lamps, waterer & feeding tray. All I had to do was pick up the nest box and place it in the cage with the opening directly under the heat lamps. I'll keep them confined and warm ... they ought to be fine for the next 4-5 weeks. I have to be a bit watchful the first week because the chicks can wiggle out of the cage ...... even though its the smaller gauge chicken wire. That has happened enough to where I know it will happen again. We have had 6 broods of chicks raised by hens. We started with 8 mature chickens in February ... now we have 58. Only 3 of the original chickens are still around. I can think of a more than half a dozen chicks that perished by coyote, mink or whatever and recall every instance we lost 1 of the 5 mature Game Fowl. Sure has been fun to watch the hens running around with about 60 chicks this past spring, summer and now fall.
New Brod Hatched yesterday .... 10 chicks
Wow!!! 8 to 58!!!! I seriously have chicken envy. Congrats on the new brood. :) WHERE ARE THE PICS????????
