I dont know the 'right way' i think you should call a vet.But i would try taping it for support. I think i have read of people using a popsicle stick and tape. If the bird is doing ok, wait til you can reach vet with some ideas for you. Good luck!!

I would go with Lurky's idea of taping its leg with a Popsicle. But if it's in tremendous pain try the vet.

I don't know if you know about this site but here it is: http://www.the-coop.org/cgi-bin/UBB/ultimatebb.cgi go on Emergency Room.

Good Luck,

Thank you for your replies. I have her leg strapped. She seems OK. Over the shock stage at least.

I had to leave my pea hen with friends while i was moving and when i went to get her back we broke her leg. I could have just cried. I have had her and her mate for about 5 years now. she couldn't walk at all when we released her and the peacock. ( We free range them and live deep in the woods on 100 acres) I had a heck of a time catching her even with her just scouting on the ground, but i caught her and put her in my chicken ICU. A small cage which limited her activity, but big enough to let her move some. I gave her meds to prevent infection and little by little she came around and after about 4 weeks she was able to walk with a slight limp. Now she is free with her mate and just has a small lump where the break was. It could have been really bad and i would have had to put her down. I think the taping will work great for the chickens.
