Tree ?mushrooms???

Algonac, MI

We have a large tree (?) which has many quite large yellow ?mushrooms? (turned brown now) which are fan shaped protuding straight outwards. Is it advisable to take the plants/fungi from the tree and add them to my compost pile?
Thanks.

I used to get big white mushrooms in my box elder tree, they looked big white toadstools. I could never reach them to check them out though.

Yours sound like they could possibly be sulpher shelf mushrooms, if they are large or possibly hen of the woods if they are small and grow in clusters. Neither of these would be a problem in the compost, though the spoor might spread with the compost and you could get them popping up in other places. Not a problem with hen of the woods, they are delicious!

There should be lots of info in the net and images too.

My grandfather used to eat those kind of mushrooms.

Thanks, jylgaskin and hemlady, for your comments.
Since I don't know what type m'rooms they are, I won't eat them. I will go online to learn more. As for the "hen of the woods", I gotta see them to recognize them. We LOVE m'rooms and would love to cultivate them next spring. I have a soft wood (?)tree which is dead and should promote fungi come spring. If you wish, I'll let you know if I am successful.
Thanks again!
