Does anyone have a picture of the AV called "Affection"? I have a small plant but I am wanting to know what an adult plant looks like and what color bloom it has.
Affection
Is it Optimara Affection? If so, here's a picture. http://www.avsa.org/Photographs/OptimaraAffectionLrg.jpg#http://../Photographs/OptimaraAffectionLrg.jpg#
Would it be normal for the juvenile leaves to have more varigation that this one? Mine aer more verigated and the leaves are really spred out.
There are apparently 3 different ones listed in Plant Files but unfortunately no photo's for any of the three! All different Hybridizers so yours is probably other than the Optimara.

Here's one at the AVSA website that is just listed as Affection. No variegation in the foliage.

I will try to post a picture of mine tonight. It looks completely different.
Ok...............Lin...............you mowed earlier.........I am just walking out the door to get the mower going.....................
Your plant is pretty whichever one it is..............never saw an ugly plant yet (just teasing)
You are smart waiting until later in the day Gail. I like to get started early, seems like if I put it off, I end up doing other things and not getting the lawn mowed. We were supposed to have storms this afternoon and the rain is just starting now at 7 p.m.! I'm glad I got the mowing out of the way for this week anyhow. I edged, mowed and swept our yard front and back and my next door neighbor's front yard. I would tackle their backyard but my riding mower won't get through the almost waist high grass! They will have to use their walk behind mower to do the back although I don't think they have the time. I think it will just die back naturally @ January when we start getting our winter weather!
Hey Begoniadude .... Where's that photo of your lovely AV 'Affection'?? Can't wait to see it.
begoniadude, it is quite normal for the juvenile leaves to have heavier variegation. Many of the variegated varieties put up solid white babies from leaf, and they develop the green as they get older. A picture would be nice (oh heck, pictures are always nice! LOL), and if you wouldn't mind telling us where you got it, that might help, too. I'm going to bet it's 'Optimara Affection', but we probably won't know for sure til it's older and blooms.
*gets on soapbox* That's why it is so important to keep the full name of plants. Many people don't realize that 'Optimara' is part of the name and the plants really need to be marked as such. There are quite a few plants that have the same name as another, but the ones from Optimara should be called 'Optimara Whatever-It-Is' rather than just 'Whatever-It-Is'. *climbs down from soapbox*
begoniadude, that was *not* directed at you, of course. You only receivied a not fully named plant, if indeed it turns out to be the Optimara variety. ;o) Don't take that as a personal shot against you, or anyone for that matter. Just trying to heighten awareness. :o)
The really bad part is, it's the growers who only half-label them to begin with. Optimara has to be insane if they think everyone who buys their unlabeled plants will be able to tell exactly which one it is from their website, which doesn't have all the plants they sell to begin with.
This is a pet peeve of mine, can ya tell? ;o)
Snow sent me a plant called Modesty.................then I saw someone post a picture and they called it Modesty............it didn't look like mine.....................so I wrote Snow and she replied that the other plant was probably called Optimara Modesty or whatever...............
Pictures say a thousand words.........besides, I can't talk without my camera and pictures (LOL)
Lin...............it was so nice and cool riding the mower for almost 2 hours...............now I am not quite half way through..................will tackle that tomorrow evening..................I don't see how you can edge and weed............that weed eaters kills my shoulder............have to call someone to come do that part............
Oh Gail, I only use the gasoline edger .... hubby has the weed wacker thing and he won't let me near it, says he's afraid I would cut my toes off or something! I have a blower too, but it's electric and light weight! Beat's sweeping! Hubby uses the blower to dry his truck and my car after washing them!
I sure am glad I don't have a lot of property to mow like you do Gail ... afraid we'd have to hire it done! That's just way too much for me!
I actually feel real grounded and sane riding the mower for hours..........in the cool breeze and then feel such a sense of accomplishment.............I love my blower............couldn't live with it (LOL)
Wish we had some of that cool breeze! We had two days last week where it was really pleasant to be outside. Now the high heat (90) and humidity is back in full force. Last night about 1:30 a.m. to be exact, I checked the outside temp and it was still 83 degrees! And here I thought we might be getting a touch of fall.
Our temps are as high as yours............but remember I live in the country............no matter how hot it is ,we have more breeze than we want................some days i think the wind is going to kill my plants.............but it does stay pleasant for people..............
We've had some tropical stuff brewing out in the Atlantic and had some gusty winds (35-40 mph) for a couple of days ... that was last week when it was so nice and seemed like a touch of fall in the air! Now we are right back to the high humidity.
You seem like you have more protection with your plants around the pool than i do............my front porch is on the south side of the house and those winds like you are talking about (the 35 to 40mph) always come out of the southeast..............and i run like crazy to the porch to protect the plants when those gusts of wind knock everything down..............
MY pool area is on the South West side of the house and at times we get winds that blow stuff around out there but not too often. When the winds are blowing a certain way I have plants getting blown over but so far haven't found one in the pool! Of course during hurricane's everything has to be moved inside somewhere or I'm afraid every plant would be swimming in chlorine water!
