I'd like to find a ripe seedstalk of Gunnera tinctoria (aka Gunnera chileansis) before it gets cut down for the winter. Anybody out there in the Pacific Northwest have a plant?
Thanks.
Kathy
Anyone have Gunnera
Well, um. Yeah. That's huge!!
AWESOME! ...you garden bed looks lovely in the background, too
How old is your Gunnera? How long did it take to make that seedstalk?
Is it heavy?
Oops. I mean how long as in, "How old did the plant have to be to produce such a big seedstalk?"
The flower stalk I have in my hand is from the backyard of a rental house that a neighbour moved into partway up a mountain. I know they get quite a bit of snow up there. If you know Vancouver - not far from the gondola for Grouse Mountain. I helped my friend move and the Gunnera was in the backyard. I'm going back for a plant as there are several plants there. I'm sure they've been there for a number of years. I'm pretty sure its the Columbian species as the leaves were tallker than me.
How crazy. The sometimes neglected and unappreciated jewels that you find at a rental house!! Glad you're going up there to get some for you. How heavy was the seed stalk - looks like maybe it was 3 - 5 lbs, judging by the way you're holding it?
Yep, that's about right. Same as a freshly caught salmon.
