Perfect nature! Is this in the same family as an African Violet as we know here in the States or some variety of it?

No, not related to the African Violets, this one is a true violet, genus Viola, family Violacea. You have a lot of violet species growing wild in USA.

This site lists all the Viola species from your state, some 29 or so different ones:

Absolutely beautiful Kennedy. I am wondering ifthey can be raised as houseplants.

I found this link as well.

The plants in your link are not related to the violets, but simply share the colour, which is why their name is violaceae.

I would think that Viola sieberana would do well in a pot, although it would need a large surface area, as it spreads and that gives its best display.

I think you would find it hard to find this plant in USA however. I have not come across it in cultivation, not even here in its native Australia. Its close cousin the Ivy-leaf Violet Viola hederacea: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1419/
is much commoner in cultivation, both here and in USA.

I have a small patch of Viola hederacea growing naturally in my lawn.
