OK, this is a new one on me. I had this A.Frydek in its pot, sunk in the ground over the summer. I brought it in and found these little okra-looking nobs sticking up around it, There are 4 of them. Is this how it multiplies? Because it had already sprouted 2 of what I assumed were pups, but those were just stems that came straight up next to the mamma, which was just like other of my alocasia's had done. Someone enlighten me bout these little pod things? :)
Thanks!
Deb
Looks like okra growing in the Frydek's pot?
Very interesting, so what you know are pups, didn't start from the "okra"? I think they look like brussels sprouts.
That is a tuber they usually form around the base of the plant and stay dormant unless removed and planted or if the parent plant dies. If you want it to grow into a new plant remove it and place in a humidity dome. Something like a 2 liter with damp soil. They usually sprout soon once they are that humid.
AuntB: You know what, I don't know if the new ones that came up, started from the brussels sprouts or not, because I didn't notice any of this til I pulled the pot out of the ground a few days ago. If they did start that way, there's not indication of that now. Hmmm.

A tuber! (Sorry, we cross-posted.) Cool. Thanks!
They are the plants equivalent to a escape pod. If the mother plant rots or dies these usually will take the plants place. I find them all the time if I reuse potting soil they pop up with the freshly potted plants.
That's so amazing. An insurance policy! :) There are several of them, so perhaps I'll take one and see if I can make it grow and leave the rest as escape pods.
