I was just chatting with my neighbor who brought some corn over for my flock and the people that have the house diagonal from me saw a family of bears, a mom and atleast 2 cubs. Eeeek! now I am going to be all night checking on the flock. The bears around here are just passing through so I hope they are already gone.

I've heard horror stories about bears wreaking havoc on and in a coop !!!

We have bears where I live , it's one of the reasons I quit feeding birds. I had finally sprung and bought myself a really nice feeder pole. A bear came along and snatched the top feeder and in doing so snapped my metal pole in two.
I have to outside dogs near my coop, I think it helps somewhat. But if they are determined to get in it would be an all out war !!!

Bears ate a lot of chickens in this area this spring before there was a lot of other food. after food got more plentiful, though, they stopped. Whew.

I have a baby monitor in the coop plus all the porch and flood lights on both ends of the house and I am going to leave lights on the first floor. And I took all the extra food in so hopfully I will make it thru the fall! Did you know chicken mumble when they have a flood light on them. I am sure its not nice the light only goes into through one side in a little window but they don't like it. i think i am getting a rifle not to kill the bear but to fire to scare it off.
