I've just got a Cestrum nocturnum and read in the PF that it has a reputation for attracting snakes, so, after an experience of my own, I started a thread in Trees and Shrubs, but ecrane3 suggested I ask here too.

Cestrum nocturnum and snakes
I haven't noticed that there are any more snakes in the cestrum than anything else. Here in AZ mine is in a pot. When I lived in Louisiana I had them in the ground and don't really remember it attracting snakes. It does get to be a large bushy shrub when planted in the ground and snakes probably like large shrubs to hide under in general..
The only snake I've seen this summer was a huge black kingsnake in the pot ghetto on my patio but the NBJ wasn't in that group of pots lol.
In India that saying exists as well. But I do have one here in pot for a few months and I live on rattle snake land. I am cautious but the fragrance has not permeated at all(prob lack of humidity). So it may not be an issue where I live.
Probably just coincidence. I've only just bought this plant, though it's quite large. It was blooming when I got it and the scent permeates to an extent. I've planted it near a seating area, but not right next to it in case the scent is too intense. I've covered it in protective fleece and it remains to be seen how much of the plant survives the winter (if any). I have put some cuttings on a heat tray, so hope I'll have something next year.....
you are smart not to plant it too close to seating area.
Mmm, a lot of people seem to find it overpowering.
yes. It is better to place in a remote place in the yard and have the wind blow the fragrance to a sitting place.
Ah, I may not have it far enough away. I'll wait til next year and see how it goes. Thanks.
