This is the result of seed I got through the Hibiscus Society. It takes the bloom forever to open, but it's not bad. The cross is Maggie x Surfrider. I had three of that cross that grew. I picked the first one and washed it off before taking the picture. We had bad storms today with high winds an a lot of rain, so it was a bit splashed with mud. This one is still a bit muddy, but after I took the other pics. I decided a little mud wasn't to bad.
New Seedling...
PRETTY!
Very Pretty Brugie!!!
I like the colors, Shirley. Bold but soft.
Tussee
Thanks you all. If you had to wait on it to open, you probably would have done what I did. The first round of flowers just wouldn't open. I finally opened one and it had 5 sets of organs. Didn't impress me much. I opened another bud a while later and had decided that this bloom was deformed because it would open. Now I see what the problem was...it was me. I just didn't wait long enough. LOL!
Nice colors!
Kyle :-)
Thanks Kyle. That was the one that was opening when you were here ten days ago.
Brugie, the color on that first shot is beautiful! Definitely a keeper :-)
It is beautiful and huge. Really, really nice :)
That is really pretty!
Thanks you all. That bloom that I picked is still just as fresh as it was yesterday. It's amazing how well it's lasting.
Oh pretty!! I like the dark ones :-)
Barry,
Will Robert or Matt be selling as well?
We, the people of Florida, do not get Hines products :(
Hi Brugie - the bloom is BEAUTIFUL!! How long did it take to produce blooms since you started it from seed? I hear it can take years to bloom?
I started the seed late last year, so less than a year from seed to bloom. I had four seed grown brugs started at the same time and I think they all bloomed but one. Some bloomed in July or August. They were singles.
Cat did you ever figure out why Hines does not sell Hibiscus in the southeast? I know there are lots of other Hines plants in the big box stores here and in FL. Yoder seems to supply all the smaller nurseries with their hibs.
Kyle and Brugie have been posting very pretty seedlings here, so I decided to post a recent shot of this table on the back porch where we put some of the day's seedling blooms for the many varieties under evaluation here. I added the names using PhotoShop software on my Mac.
As professionals we produce lots of new Hibiscus, and this shot is not meant to discourage any of the enthusiastic amateurs who love hibiscus and are learning to hybridize with them. We were exactly in that same position 19 years ago, and that same enthusiasm has lasted all this time and fortunately has become a source of income. We are so fortunate to be paid for doing this incredibly interesting work.
peace,
Barry & Susan
Barry - those are all absolutely gorgeous!!
Oh my, if I had to choose from those, I would be in big trouble. I sure do like Mountain Air and Collectible, tho. I love all colors, but am finding that I do prefer lighter or brighter colors because they show up beautifully against the foliage. You have some awesome blooms there.
Wow, Barry, they are ALL beautiful. I guess my tops would beYoda, Fiery Furnace, The Raven, Jazz, Mountain Air, The Wizard of Odd - okay, yeah, well all of them!
